Wonderful Reformed Reflections on Scripture

Calvin's sermons on Job are a marvelous way into the Reformer's exegetical technique, his homiletic skills, and his theology. Clearly enunciating the Reformed perspective on God's sovereignty, and both the human necessity and need for humility in the face of unexplained suffering, Calvin cannot be beaten. Time and again he argues that we are to rely both on Scripture and even more so-- on the Triune God of Scripture when we are struggling with our faith and Christianity in the face of seemingly senseless suffering. Though not everyone will agree with Calvin's theology, here his theology meets the road and offers traveling "mercies" to those who believe, yet want and need help with their unbelief. In addition, the reproduced facsimile of the early English text is interesting to read and helps one to imagine reading it, and reflecting upon it, during the time period in which Calvin lived. Worth the effort if one wants to know Calvin and his theology.

One of Halter's finest

On a night in August of 1938, police constable Edward Watkins is walking his beat when he comes across some strange sights. It seems that somebody is walking around the streets of London in the garb of a seventeenth-century plague doctor. Soon afterwards, Watkins has a conversation with an odd character calling himself Doctor Marcus, a doctor of crime. Suspicious, the officer is convinced that the doctor has hidden a body inside a nearby trash can--a suspicion that Doctor Marcus confirms! Watkins looks into them and finds they are all empty, much to Marcus' apparent surprise. So the mad doctor skips off, but as a parting shot he tells the officer to look into the trash cans once again just in case. When Watkins does this, he discovers to his horror that there's a dead body inside after all.

But how did it get there? And where did Doctor Marcus disappear to? All this seems like it is nonsense, but a few months later, Dr. Alan Twist and Inspector Archibald Hurst are visited by a man named Peter Moore, secretary to Sir Gordon Miller, a prolific author of mystery plays. According to Moore, Sir Gordon received a visitor in his study and the two men had a verbal duel of sorts, which ended in a murder challenge. The two men toss a coin, and the result will determine which man will commit a murder. That man must try and pin the blame on the other, and under no circumstances are the two players allowed to refer to the "game". Unfortunately, Moore could not see what the coin landed on...

Before long, Peter Moore is found dead, shot during an attempted burglary inside the home of his own employer! Dr. Twist and Inspector Hurst hurry to the scene of the crime, and they attempt to solve this complex mystery. Hurst instantly comes up with six hypotheses, but Dr. Twist isn't entirely convinced, and postulates that there must be a seventh hypothesis to explain everything.

The Seventh Hypothesis is quite possibly Paul Halter's masterpiece. There is so much meat to this story and you're never quite certain what on earth is going on until the end, even if, by some chance, you tumble to the secret behind a trick or two before the end. There are at least two impossibilities in this novel. The first has an excellent and simple solution. The second is a bit more complex and harder to guess, but I liked the solution to the first one a little more. Just as much fun as the impossibilities are the verbal duels, which seem like they were inspired by the verbal duels in Sleuth, with revelation after revelation further complicating the plot despite there being only two principal actors.

The most notable achievement is that Paul Halter effectively gives you a mystery with only two suspects and challenges you to guess which one has committed the crimes. You have a 50:50 chance, right? And yet Halter manages to calculate just how your brain will work. Hmm... you say to yourself. It seems impossible for X to have done it, so he's got an elaborate alibi that will get busted wide open, but if that's the case it means Y must have done it to frame X, but if that's the case, it must be an elaborate double-bluff designed to get you to think Y has done it when it was really X, but if that's the case... I made my official guess near the start of the novel, but must have changed it a good five or six times before I got to the end. This is quite simply a diabolically ingenious detective story, a masterpiece of plotting at its finest! In fact, I wouldn't hesitate to call this one of the best detective stories I've read all year long.

To write this review, I read both versions of the novel. My French edition is found in an omnibus released by Le Masque, and I bought the English translation in Kindle form. I can highly recommend both of these editions. John Pugmire has done an excellent job of getting to the heart of Halter's writing style. I can't define it in technical terms, but I performed the only litmus test I can offer: I read one chapter of the book in French, read the next in English, then switched back into French. All three chapters felt like they were part of the same book: an accomplishment for which John Pugmire must be lauded. He finds that sense of play: Halter challenges his readers to solve the crime and then leads them on a merry chase down several garden paths simultaneously.

Overall, The Seventh Hypothesis comes highly recommended for fans of complex Golden-Age-style plots. This is one of Halter's best efforts and one of Dr. Twist's most complex cases. It ends on a wholly satisfactory note, and the solution is diabolically ingenious. The writing is most agreeable, with a sense that the whole thing is a challenge to the reader: a challenge Halter won hands-down. This is plotting at its finest, and is not to be missed under any circumstances!

Could've been better

Although I'm most definitely a Paul Halter fan, I found THE SEVENTH HYPOTHESIS somewhat disappointing. I gave it three stars because the author's usual inventiveness and solid plotting ability are fully in evidence. As I pointed out in my review of his THE LORD OF MISRULE, characterization is not one of his strengths. But in other works of his, characterizations, however sketchy they might be, are attempted. I can't say the same for this novel. I thought everyone sounded alike, and it was often difficult to remember who certain people were, requiring me to page back to identify them.

That said, I nevertheless hope John Pugmire will continue to bring us translations of Halter's work.

Truly an impossible-crime mystery

Inspector Hurst of Scotland Yard and Dr. Twist, the brilliant criminologist, spend hours in this book concocting hypotheses, demolishing them, reconstructing them, and brooding over them. The seventh hypothesis is the one they haven't thought of yet.

There's a theatrical murder, an attack that might have been meant for murder, and an accident that could have been murder. There are two suspects whose motives can only be wildly surmised. Both are stereotypes (clever egotistical writer, vain self-satisfied actor). Suspicion shifts at a dizzying rate between one and the other.

I normally enjoy Paul Halter's mysteries, but this one was too unbelievable for me, the plot too convoluted, the happenings too preposterous. I also couldn't keep the characters straight until deep into the book.

I would suggest reading The Demon of Dartmoor and/or The Fourth Door rather than this one.

Of course, The Seventh Hypothesis belongs to the impossible crime genre, so maybe I shouldn't be objecting to its improbability. My husband liked the book. Other intelligent people did too. See what you think.

5th Grade Simple (and that's a good thing)

I'm very impressed by the straightforwardness in which Scott Alan Turner presents his financial advice and tips. He makes it abundantly clear that the information he writes about has been gathered from professionals and has been applied by himself. He understands that in order to get started on the road to financial independence, many people are intimidated by the financial intricacies. Scott Alan sifts through the deluge of savings and finance and pans out the best nuggets to get started. Yes, he says his intention was to make it 5th grade simple and for that I'm grateful. I always wanted someone to explain it to me without feeling embarrassed for not knowing the fundamentals. Now I feel like I can begin with a sense of direction. Thanks Scott!

Understandable, educating and entertaining

Easy to understand, down to earth and helpful book to better navigate your finances. The author has a great approach and an entertaining style, not the boring, dry voice you would expect from the subject.

Get this book and read it! Then do it!

First of all, I am likely not Scott Alan Turner’s target market for his book, as I am a CFP/ Fee-Only planner. However, since I do this for a living, it allows me to evaluate this book from a different point of view from readers. Secondly, full disclosure, I have known Scott personally for many years and expected something wonderful. But Scott exceeded even that high bar. This book is a big winner!

Most financial/investment writers and practitioners tend to complicate and obfuscate in order to make themselves look smarter than their readers or clients. On the other hand, Scott cuts through the mystery and voodoo of personal financial planning and simplifies. He uses a breezy, conversational style that makes it appropriate for everyone from novices to guys like me (I picked up some great stories to use with clients).
I couldn’t recommend this more highly. Scott explains the basic the basics of investing in simple English. It’s solid advice; the kind you rarely get from the talking heads on TV, radio, and the rest of the media. Scott backs it all up with good solid research; this is not his opinion, it’s facts, but presented in a way that your Grandmother could understand.

Most readers should be able to implement Scott’s recommendations at an absurdly low cost and outperform most professionals. Get this book and read it! Then do it!

Excellent resource

I have referred to this book many times. It provides practical information which I have learned from and have shared with others. The late Tom Imholte was very accomplished and was in charge of design and engineering for a large food company. His wealth of experience, though now somewhat dated is valuable. Anyone involved in food plant sanitation, design or pest control would find value here.

A Necessary Resource for Engineers and Sanitarians

Much of what I know about the assessment of the design of food equipment and facilities I learned from this book. In assessing equipment and facilities, I use not only the information provided but the "way of thinking" that helps solve problems. No book can give you a checklist for every situation, but with the basics provided you can apply the concepts to new situations.

Nicholas Olsberg is the former director of the Canadian Centre for Architecture in Montreal. Jean-Louis Cohen is the Sheldon H. NOT the comprehensive book I've been waiting for... for years

This book is beautiful, it has lots of pictures and drawings I had never seen before. I have been waiting for a really great Lautner book to be published because all the others show 'pretty' pictures, but I have never been able to get a true sense of the buildings (I am an architect). i was hoping this book would have the pretty pictures and more overall drawings. This book is a great complement to the 'pretty picture books' as it has images that are not regularly seen in the other Lautner books..... I just feel this book doesn't truly satisfy my need for information and clarification on these buildings.

A book on SoCal architect, John Lautner

A former student and employee of Frank Lloyd Wright, Mr. Lautner was a Southern California pioneer in contemporary architecture. To describe his projects, the words, "dramatic" and "superbly detailed" are high on the list. Siting each home on the property was a key to their drama.

Perhaps I should add that, whilst a student at the old Chouinard Institute of Art (now famously known as CalArts), I signed up for a class (in 1968 or so) called. Architectural Appreciation, taught by Mr. Lautner. Well, to be honest, it was really about appreciating HIs architecture. But was a hugely rewarding class as we drove out to, and toured, many of his projects. Clearly, Mr. Lautner was not into duplicating his efforts from one project to the next. Each home he designed was unique in its own way taking full advantage of the views that were always abundant in the ambience and design. A home on the boardwalk on Balboa Island in Newport Beach looked out over the harbor and channel; the home in Malibu was on the beach in the Colony taking in the ocean views; a home in the Hollywood Hills (known as Silver Top) looked out over a lake and the Los Angeles skyline; a home built into the mountains above Palm Springs looks out over the Coachella Valley.

This book is well written and nicely designed with great photography. I do wish, however, it had been printed in the USA by a lithographer with the experience of producing fine art books. (There are only about three such printing companies who can do this type of work.) In the black and white photos, the shadow details occasionally plug up while the highlight details blow out. Too bad for such an important story about such an important figure in America's history of architecture. Safe to say, the original negatives and photo prints were much better than this. Alas, printing offshore does keep book prices affordable and accessible.

Tons of interesting information

The names may change but the myths stay ALMOST the same.... I have read a ton of this book so far... I highlight the good parts however I find I am highlighting almost the whole thing! There is a lot more information in the stories in this than in the Bible but it really gives a clearer picture. It covers topics that are untouched by our regular Bible. I wish people would have known a lot of this stuff, the would might not have gotten as messed up as it has... I am willing to read it with an open mind and I am really glad that I do or else I wouldn't have given myself the chance to have a better understanding or different view of what I once couldn't quite understand. I also like that at the end of some sections the scribe notes when things may have been added or what may have been left out or why... Things are written in plain and simple English that I can tell hasn't been interpreted 10 times before getting to me. If you get this book and actually read it you will find it fascinating and revealing! It is hard to argue with things that are true and wise. My new favorite book! Stop being so skeptical and read it!

I enjoyed it immensley

This is a very well made book, in that, it speaks to the reader, explaining in a most poetic and biblical way, what took place in the Dead Sea scrolls, laws that we should live by and many books that is not in our regular Bible; But, with this Bible it explains in an understandable way the relationship between God and man, it will awaken an understanding in you that most of us never had awaken before. Yes, another form of knowledge, spoken in English. I enjoyed it immensley.
