Its Funny

I read this book in my second grade class. This is a funny book. Even Steven likes everything even. Odd Todd likes everything odd. For example, Even Steven would like 8 pancakes and Odd Todd would like 7 pancakes. Even Steven goes through hard work with Odd Todd. Then, Even Steven notices that odd and even are both good. My favorite part was when Odd Todd and Even Steven win their $50 prize.

Concept-Rich and Too Cute.

My 4 1/2 year old and I love this book! We're starting pre-K this fall, and I've been looking for math-content books to enrich our daily reading practice. Like another reviewer said, the book isn't overtly focused on math concepts, but I think the idea that everything about Even Steven and Odd Todd is even and odd (respectively, of course) is really clever. My son loves the quirkiness of each character, and I'm thrilled that he's getting some knowledge base of the concepts he'll eventually learn in school.

Incidentally, I purchased this book because it was listed as a resource at the back of "Missing Mittens" by Stuart J. Murphy. If you're looking for books based on mathematical concepts, Murphy's MathStart books are really nicely done. http://www.mathstart.net/

Very clever

My 2 1/2 year old loves this book. I have read it many times. I first heard about it when a mom at a park was reciting it from memory to her 2 year old. It is a very fun book and a great way to introduce the concept of odd and even numbers. Also, the pictures are very fun and my son loves counting all of the fish, cats, gerbils, etc on the pages. So, he is definitely developing his counting too.

About the Author
Bill Eddy is a lawyer, therapist, mediator and the President of High Conflict Institute. He developed the "High Conflict Personality" theory (HCP Theory) and has become an international expert on managing disputes involving high-conflict personalities and personality disorders. He provides training on this subject to lawyers, judges, mediators, managers, human resource professionals, businesspersons, healthcare administrators, college administrators, homeowners’ association managers, ombudspersons, law enforcement, therapists and others. He has been a speaker and trainer in over 25 states, several provinces in Canada, Australia, France and Sweden.

As an attorney, Bill is a Certified Family Law Specialist in California and the Senior Family Mediator at the National Conflict Resolution Center in San Diego. Prior to becoming an attorney in 1992, he was a Licensed Clinical Social worker with twelve years’ experience providing therapy to children, adults, couples and families in psychiatric hospitals and outpatient clinics. He has taught Negotiation and Mediation at the University of San Diego School of Law for six years and he is on the part-time faculty of the Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution at the Pepperdine University School of Law and the National Judicial College.

Extremely helpful

I recently managed an employee who's a high conflict person (probably BPD). I learned so much from this book and it actually gave me empathy for these folks and the fact that you simply can't reason with them. They have such a hair trigger for danger and go into some sort of serious survival mode.

My employee tried to report a "hostile work environment" to HR, but I'd already been talking to HR about her for a period of time. I, also, luckily, had a strong reputation for being very empathetic, fair, and calm.

Her survival technique was to talk to my manager and manager's manager about me, when I tried to enforce any boundaries or work standards. The first time it happened, I became extrememly concerned. But by using these techniques and following the advice in this book--it's almost like she got frustrated that I wouldn't react and quit. She didn't like constructive, simple feedback and from the point I started coaching her and working w/ HR to when she quit only took about two months.

What was scary about this perons, was that she couldn't get through a sentence without twisting things or outright lieing. It's like she was contantly spinning everything to try to manipulate peopel's perception. She'd lie about things it made no sense to lie about. One week she'd storm at me and cry and be going to HR and the next week she'd ask to have lunch as if nothing happened.

I was definitely this person's "Target of Blame", and she did enlist a negative advocate to vent to, but this person ended up being very nice to me, and we get along. I don't doubt it's damaged some of my relationships, which had always been good at work.

It was one of the draining, stressful experiences I've ever been through and this book was a godsend.

I'd say if you're dealing with a high conflict person at work...get this book, read it all the way through once, and then read through slowly and really aborb the information. It works. I used the E.A.R. method, and I remembered that you can never, ever let your (understandable and justified) anger show. People with BPD in particular have preternatural attunement for emotions, though.

Next...document everything. Take time out of each day to note the date, and right down anything and everything that happened. Never be alone with the High Conflict Person and beat them to the punch. Get to HR, managers, etc. first and bring all your documentation.

Don't let on to the person in any way that you're doing this, though.

These people can trigger a lot of emotions, so it's important to really take care of yourself, use the support systems at work for employees, and even bring this book to HR or your management team to explain what's going on (be careful though, as Eddy describes in the book, you only want to use this info to protect yourself). This is all easier said than done, I'd wake up in the middle of the night with knots in my stomach and feel scared to go to work not knowing what she'd do next.

I also have some high conflict family members, so this book has already helped me not engage or escalate drama.

You can't change these folks, tell them they're wrong, or get them to listen to reason. So save yourself years of heartache and hurt, and don't try. Just protect yourself and get on with your life.

How to protect yourself from toxic people

Bill Eddy's It's All Your Fault is a must-have book for anyone (and that is most of us) who have what he calls High Conflict People in our lives. What makes this book so valuable is that it isn't a psychology book, even though he does briefly write about the origins of the personality disorders that HCPs suffer from. This book is about how to protect yourself from becoming sucked into drama, distorted feelings and paranoia that HCPs bring into our lives. The examples of HCPs that Eddy writes about are those we encounter in legal and business settings. HCPs waste vast amounts of taxpayer money through frivolous and bizarre litigation and can cripple businesses and demoralize their fellow employees with their angry and manipulative behavior. Eddy's advice seems counter-intuitive; he suggests listening to their complaints with what he calls E.A.R., that is Empathy, Attention and Respect. Anything less simply confirms their self-image of themselves as victims, makes their behavior worse and opens us up to being what he calls a target of blame on the HCPs part. We also risk getting sucked into the HCPs drama and taking their side and becoming a negative advocate and unwittingly making a bad situation worse. Eddy wisely writes that HCPs cannot tolerate the slightest amount of criticism and nothing we can do will change them. This is great advice. Other books about dealing with personality-disordered people suggest that we have the capacity to change them and frankly, it's absolutely futile. All we can do is steer clear of them. Eddy also suggests a communication style he calls B.I.F.F. This means keeping our communications with HCPs Brief, Informative, Friendly and Firm and establishing strong boundaries with them (since they are incapable of establishing boundaries themselves). This is an invaluable book, clearly and concisely written, and thank you Bill Eddy for making your experience available to us!

Great Help for dealing with tough people

Chances are some time in your life you'll encounter a high conflict person (HCP). An HCP will take things you say and misinterpret them, blame you for everything and can easily convince others that you are off your rocker. Oh, you've experienced this too?

Bill Eddy is the president and co-founder of the High Conflict Institute. He is an attorney, therapist, mediator and public speaker. He provides seminars on mental health issues for judges, attorneys and mediators.

This book is incredibly powerful for three reasons. First, Bill takes all of the psychological terms and makes them understandable to the common man. Then he describes high conflict behavior in a way that makes it easy to identify. Lastly he tells lots of true stories -- making the concepts easy to grasp.

Bill Eddy doesn't tell you how to "beat" the other person in an argument. His whole focus is to help you understand what drives the high conflict person and how to protect yourself and live without lowering yourself to destructive behavior.

Here are few of the key points Bill covers in the "Understanding HCP" section:

-Don't take their personal attacks personally -- it's more about them revealing their hurt and weaknesses than it is about you.
-Don't get involved in retaliating and giving them negative feedback, it just feeds the fire of anger and escalates the situation.
-Don't become a negative advocate. High conflict people have a way of sucking you into their problems and way of thinking. We need to set firm, yet loving boundaries.

In the second half of the book he gives plenty of practical, actionable advice.

Whether you're dealing with an angry teen, spouse or ex-spouse, sibling, neighbor, co-worker or boss, the illustrations and real-life stories Bill Eddy shares will equip you to deal more effectively in these situations. This is not a quick fix book -- we're talking about changing our natural inclination to defend and attack when hurt -- but it is a real eye opener and will lead to long term changes in thinking and behaving.

Both Annette and I have read this book and referred to it time and again as we run into High Conflict People in our lives.

Product Review for Motivation: Biological, Psychological, and Environmental (4th Edition)

This is a textbook for a Motivational Psychology course I am enrolled in. The textbook is decent and has been recently updated. I have noticed a few spelling and grammar errors that were likely due to spell check being utilized instead of a human editor. Some of the studies are a bit dated, and due to that, new research is emerging now that contradicts some of the material in the textbook, but this is fairly normal due to the nature of the discipline. In some of the chapters, the author can be long winded, especially in instances where he breaks down a topic and presents several studies that suggest the same information. Overall though, it is a well-written and easy to understand book with lots of empirical research to back up topics. The subject is rather interesting as well, which helps to keep the reader engaged. I would suggest this text to educators or students who need resources or background information.

Very helpful, informative book

I finished my psychology degree last year and this is the only book that I truly remember and wish that I still had to refer to. The information contained is very relevant to phenomenon experienced in life and helped me understand a lot of interesting aspects of human behavior. I rented the book but wished I had purchased it. I will probably buy it in the near future.

About the Author
S. Christian Albright received his B.S. degree in mathematics from Stanford in 1968 and his Ph.D. in operations research from Stanford in 1972. Since then, he has been teaching in the Operations and Decision Technologies Department in the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University. He has taught courses in management science, computer simulation, and statistics to all levels of business students: undergraduates, MBAs, and doctoral students. His current interest is in spreadsheet modeling, including development of VBA applications in Excel. Dr. Albright has published more than 20 articles in leading operations research journals in the area of applied probability. He has also published a number of successful textbooks, including DATA ANALYSIS AND DECISION MAKING, DATA ANALYSIS FOR MANAGERS, and SPREADSHEET MODELING AND APPLICATIONS.

One of the best VBA training book, even without Part II of the book dealing with Science applications and operations research.
Regarding the book's companion files, it seems that Cengage Learning have improved with this matter and the companion files are published in a public companion site, just google:

and choose: Book Companion Site (choose the first one, the other are for previous editions)
Actually I bought this pricey book just after verifying that the files are publically available since quite a few reviews complained about the missing/hard to get companion files and even some reviewed the book just with 1 star because of that.

Accompanying files are hard to get. But even you get them, the file set is not full, and lion portion of "exercise" files are not included, making the most exercises which required accompanying files useless. Hope the publisher could fix this issue one day, making this book more valuable. Also please note that exercises are coming without solutions, so this book is not perfect for self-study in my opinion.

Valerie is alone. Her family tiptoes around her, her friends act like she doesn't exist, and most of the people in the community think she should be dead.

Valerie's boyfriend, the person she trusted more than anyone else, shattered her life when he brought a gun to school and wounded several students and killed many others, including himself. Most people believe Valerie was involved, but she had no idea what Nick was planning.

After spending weeks in the hospital recovering from a near-fatal gunshot wound to the leg, Valerie is moved to the psychiatric ward for observation. Afterwards, during her many therapy sessions, she begins to think back on her relationship with Nick and all the events that led up to the terrible act that changed an entire community.

HATE LIST is an extremely powerful story. I was in tears for the last eighty pages and felt emotionally drained by the time I reached the last page. Jennifer Brown has given us a wonderful example of the importance of keeping a watchful eye out for bullying in our schools.

Valerie is a strong character and it was great to witness her healing process. Once I started HATE LIST I couldn't stop. I read every chance I could. Even though the subject matter is very serious, this book was a pleasure to read.

Packs a punch

I live in Montreal, where one of the most horrendous school shootings happened over a decade ago. I can tell you that we can still feel this event very deeply.

Reading The Hate List brought me right back to that horrible day when we found out that this madman had walked into a school and just starting shooting all the "feminists" who took his place at the school.

The Hate List is extremely well written and proof of this, in my opinion, is that I felt anger, resentment, fear and every other feeling I could on this topic. This is such a horrible subject matter and the author manages to write about it in a sensitive, yet true and frank way.

I don't know how I feel about the involvement of Valerie - even after finishing the book and interestingly enough, Valerie does not know how to feel either.

This book is a gut wrenching look at a mind gone and how society deals with the aftermath.

Deeply Moving, Gripping, and Powerful

Hate List by Jennifer Brown is a terrific book on many levels. First, there is the main plot where Valerie Leftman struggles to come to terms with the fact that she was the girlfriend of a school shooter, Nick, whom she had unwittingly abetted in the shooting. This fact leaves her with mixed feelings of guilt and anger. She must also work out her feelings of love and compassion for this boy, whom Brown has painted as a real human being rather than a stereotypically bad individual. Brown artfully engages the reader to journey along with Valerie as she explores and comes to terms with her role in, and the consequential suffering from the shooting.

Secondly, this is a book about teenage angst and real high school tension that takes place in everyday circumstances. Additionally, Valerie has parents that have their own issues and shortcomings. Brown weaves a thread of pain through the family dynamics, as well as the high school dynamics that is realistic and insightful. This gives the reader insight into Valerie's anger as she and Nick create the Hate List as almost an inside joke.

Thirdly, this book is about a process of moving from mental anguish and mental instability to mental health through a few various factors. It takes a knowledgeable and caring therapist. It takes courage from Valerie to take many baby steps to work through the process. It takes persistence from Valerie to not give up when the process was so difficult that it seemed impossible. It also takes a change in focus from Valerie as she must not read too much into each encounter or conversation. Finally, it just takes time as she matures from adolescence into adulthood.

Brown captures these levels by intricately growing the reader's understanding of Valerie by moving easily back and forth in time from before the shooting to the results after the shooting. Readers can easily identify with the mental turmoil because Brown has captured the essence of high school relationships so common in adolescence.

I highly recommend this book to young adults, as well as adults of all ages. It especially gives hope to all who are struggling. I predict this will be a best seller.

About the Series:
People know magic is fake--card tricks and illusions, magicians and entertainers. But there is an older magick, a powerful force hidden from modern eyes, buried in folklore and myths, remembered by the few who practice the old ways and respect the lessons of past generations.

The term "warlock" is a variation on the Old English word waerloga, primarily used by the Scots. It meant traitor, monster or deceiver. Spellbindingly Sexy

Not only is Love Potions a fabulous PN romance, it is easily one of the funniest books I have read this year. I enjoyed it hugely and with a sexy Scottish warlock, a stubborn likeable lady, a crazy bunch of relatives and magick it brought perfect laugh-your-socks-off humour and I sat here making very unladylike snorts with tears running down my face. Exactly my type of humour.

Lydia Barratt is a bit of a hermit, happiest making her beauty products with her BFF Charlotte and enjoying the quiet life. That is until Erik MacGregor, a deliciously hot Scot moves in next door with his crazy family. He's not looking for love, but something about Lydia draws him to her. Yet she refuses to fall for his charm.

Cheeky, witty and, just to confirm, very sexy, our kilt-clad wooing warlock had me spellbound. His seduction tactics had me sighing, his singing somewhat scarred me, and the banter, tricks and mischief between him and his siblings had me howling. And I loved Lydia as she's no wallflower and is feisty, funny and when it comes to giving Erik a taste of his own medicine it has hilarious consequences. But it's not all humour and seduction there's some suspense and it's one of those treats that has you convinced you have it sussed, only to fail miserably.

Whether you are a fan of PN romance or not, this is a book I seriously recommend. The first book I have read from Michelle M. Pillow won't be the last. It was an absolute joy to read and I hope we are treated to more from the MacGregor clan; they quickly proved themselves to be a completely endearing fun crazy family.

Not one of the author's best.

I have usually enjoyed Michelle Pillow's books but this one was a return. I tried - I really tried but I just could not force myself to finish it. I only got to 73% of the book and decided life was just too short to waste time on something I was not enjoying.

The writing is fine. No problems with severe misspellings or grammar usage. Good imagination and descriptions of characters and actors. Strong Alpha male. Has a plot with no huge holes in it. Usually a book of this length - I read in one setting - but I tried reading this over several days.

My main problem was with the pacing and plot. Usually when I read - I find myself turning pages as fast as I can in order to finish the book. With this book, read some, get bored, put it away, get desperate to read something, open the e-book back up, read a little more, get bored, put it away, repeat. I was never drawn to the characters or plot. The sex scenes left me cold. The description of the draw between the two main characters was overshadowed by the "magic spell" that forced the characters together. There were actions scenes but they were extremely short and rushed in order to introduce an "evil force" or another problem the protagonists have to overcome.

This was a very hard review to write because usually I enjoy the author's books and I had to really think about why this book was a killer for me since it took so long for me to actually read up to the part where I just gave up.

Very small spoiler:
A "magic spell" that makes the female protagonist turn from a very shy person to a total "slut" (the author's word - not mine) - to desire and have no choice but to give the male protagonist head in order to suck the magical and life forces from him. After that it really started going down hill for me.

Of Kilts and Of Magic

Opposites attract romances are usually fun to read. There tends to be a healthy dose of humor entwined with moments of seriousness. Love Potions is just that.

There's plenty of teasing and joking between Erik MacGregor and his family. They pull pranks on each other just because, and the laughter they induce doesn't stop even when Erik and his brothers brawl on the floor. Their sister's no saint either; her prank brings about the most delightful, laugh-til-your-stomach-hurts scene ever that involves poor Lydia.

I've never met a woman who doesn't like the idea of being serenaded. It's romance at its best--him declaring his undying love for her while the world listens in. For Lydia, that wasn't the case. Erik's impromptu serenade of her was the result of a spell gone wrong thanks to his sister. Still, I couldn't stop laughing even though I felt bad for Lydia being subjected to his caterwauling.

But there are also serious moments, mostly between Erik and Lydia. Erik's smooth, confident, and does what needs to be done to get what he wants. His attraction to Lydia is undeniable, but his methods of gaining her attention are less than stellar. He's forward and assuming, not realizing that Lydia requires a softer touch, that she deserves a softer approach. Lydia's a semi-recluse, preferring the solitude of her hillside home to mingling with others. It's not that she's not beautiful or smart or a go-getter. Her grandma was labeled eccentric and a witch. I can see why she was reluctant to leave the sanctuary of her home.

Don't think for one second her reserved behavior means she's weak. She's not. Erik might be all that and a bag of chips wrapped up in a kilt, but Lydia's got a mind of her own and she doesn't take crap from anyone. She's not shy to put Erik in his place, refuse his requests, or listen to his commands when she knows she can be of help.

Love Potions is a quick, snappy, witty, fun-filled love story about two people who hardly seem compatible but really are. This is my first novel by Ms. Pillow and it won't be my last. I can't wait to read about the rest of the MacGregor family and how their magic plays into each of them finding their own happy ever after.

About the Author
Stephen Miller practiced as a lawyer until the early nineties when he retired in order to pursue other interests, including his passion for most forms of popular music, in particular his interest in the culture and characters of American country music. For six years he reviewed albums, books and concerts, and interviewed a variety of artists for a weekly country music show on commercial radio station Scot FM. His acclaimed biography, Johnny Cash - The Life Of An American Icon, was published in 2003. He lives in Edinburgh and is married with four children.

Dolly's dreams started when she woke up ...

Little girls often dream of fame and glory at night, but Dolly had bigger dreams than most. It must have been difficult to dream when life itself was almost crowded out by eleven siblings, a father who enjoyed taking a nip now and then and a mother who certainly had little time to nurture the fantasy life of a precocious youngster. Sevierville County, Tennessee wasn't exactly a thriving metropolis and no one was going to come knocking at the Parton's door to listen to a little whippersnapper sing her heart out, but there were people who did believe in her and one of them was her uncle, Bill Owens. Dolly's dreams would take her far beyond the Smoky Mountains and, as she later maintained, "her dreams started when she woke up."

Stephen Miller, author of the mesmerizing new biography of Dolly, Smart Blonde: Dolly Parton, struggled to look beyond the glitz and the gaudy to discover an intelligent and extremely talented woman. As a young girl many children shunned her and their parents, naturally, didn't want their children hanging around with someone with such loose morals. Childhood wasn't easy for her. As she later claimed, "I was the most popular girl in the school for all the wrong reasons . . . I had a foxy personality." She neglected to add the word "brains," but the combination of all her assets later dropped her into the world of country music like a ten-ton atom bomb.

After meeting her future husband Carl Dean and the Wishy-Washy Laundromat her life started moving faster than the spin cycle on a Maytag. Her talent began to blossom and Dolly began to leave them all in the dust, including the talented Porter Wagoner. Not all that glitters is gold and this intensely private woman began to experience some problems associated with fame. Why did Porter want to sue her? Was there anything to the rumor that her pal Judy Ogle was more than just an assistant? Did her purported abandonment of her family lead to animosity later on? The infamous sister Stella had a few things to say about her sister . . .

According to Steve Buckingham, "If you like Dolly you have to take the deep thinking Dolly, the great musician Dolly, the incredible songwriting Dolly, along with the glitzy Dolly, the corny Dolly, the showgirl; I mean it's all her."

As a Dolly Parton neophyte, I found this book extremely fascinating, well written and found myself thinking if this book were an authorized biography it would be an excellent choice. Miller was able to glean tidbits from Dolly's sister Stella that would interest even the most skeptical know-it-all. The star stalkers of the world may find little in this book they don't already claim to know, but the average reader will come away with a sense of awe, wonder and respect for one of the century's most talented musical icons. My own journey through the book was complimented and enjoyed by several trips to youtube to watch numerous clips of Dolly throughout the years. I used to race quickly between radio dials to avoid country music, but artists like Dolly Parton gave pause to this habit and books like this one can make anyone stop and take note. This book is well worth the money and will provide many hours of affordable entertainment.

Skeptical at first.

I read Smart Blonde immediately after reading Dolly's autobiography, My Life and Other Unfinished Business. I felt Steven Miller
simply used the Dolly Parton book to tap into the money base of the Dolly fans all over the world.

In part, this is correct, however the book is factual with references to its numerous sources. Mr. Miller states in the beginning
that very few people close to Dolly would talk to him. It seems there is always one relative willing to speak up for
their own advantage and Miller leans on Stella Parton's comments and point of view frequently. It also relies on Dolly's autobiography,
which weakened the book and again capitalized on the Dolly label. There were other more comprehensive and informative articles
that were not included in this book. Further research on the making of the Trio II album had a much clearer picture of
the conflict involved between the three artists and how this affected the actual construction of the music.

This book does emphasize Dolly's business smarts and acheivements in an objective way.

Dolly Parton is an amazing, creative woman with great business instincts and foresight that has set
her apart from any musician on the planet and paved the way for other women to follow. This book
will show you how this came about. With that, I would still recommend to read Dolly's autobiography
with it.

Looking at An American Original!

Think what you will of Dolly Parton but she is definitely an American original. Born into abject poverty in Tennessee, she had the soul of a poet and vocal cords to match. Her driving ambition and saavy helped her climb the entertainment ladder and become a major figure not just in country music but in American life. Stephen Miller details the life and career of this smart, talented and altogether unique woman in this 2008 Omnibus Press release.

In some 380-odd pages, author Miller examines all aspects of the Dolly phenomenon. He does a fine job of relating her early life, her marriage to Carl Dean, her country music breakthrough with Porter Wagoner, her solo career and subsequent success in music, movies and other venues. Like certain other celebrities - Johnny Carson comes to mind - Parton has created a bubble of privacy over certain parts of her life. This means, among other things, that close friends and business asssociates would not talk to Miller nor the lady herself. For a 'Tennessee hillbilly,' Parton really has done an amazing job of manipulating the media machine over the past 40 years and continues to do so. And, because of that, Miller's portrait of Dolly Rebecca Parton, while insightful and fascinating, is incomplete.

In the end, the reader feels admiration for Parton who has created so many beautiful songs, touched so many hearts and been so successful in the music business yer has endeared herself to legions of fans. She's easily one of the most successful self-made women in America. Yet, you wonder about the price of that success. She offers no apologies about feeling the need for and having various plastic surgery procedures. Viewing photographs of her over the years however leaves a feeling of sadness. In her early days Parton was a lovely woman, a natural beauty. Now her face is an advertisement of the dangers of plastic surgery. Was all that pain worth it?

In any case, SMART BLONDE is an informed and insightful look at an American musical treasure. Long after people stop talking about her wigs or breasts, they'll remember the touching songs sung by that one-in-a-million voice. Recommended.

Funniest Christmas Song Ever.

I bought this CD mostly to hear "Christmas Gets in the Way." It is such a hilarious compilation of business "busy-ness." It is a mate to the same writer's "It's all about the Gold," from The Wedding Singer.
