About the Author
Carroll L. Shry, Jr., is presently an instructor at the Frederick County Public Schools Career and Technology Center in the Principles of Landscaping and Nursery Management program in Maryland. His credentials include a BS degree in Agricultural Education/Horticulture from the University of Maryland and an MS in Agricultural Education/Horticulture from West Virginia University. Mr. Shry is an active member of many professional organizations including the American Horticultural Society, the American Nurserymen's Association and the National FFA Alumni Association. He is past President of NAAE (NVATA), a Certified Professional Horticulturist and owns and operates his own landscape business.

H. Edward Reiley was involved in agriculture as a member of the American Rhododendron Society for which he won a Gold Medal and served as president and in agricultural education as a former Director of Vocational Education for the Frederick County Board of Education. He retired in 1981. He was a member of various professional organizations including the FFA Alumni Association in which he was a lifetime member. Mr. Reiley was named Vocational Educator of the year in Maryland for 1978 and received the Honorary American Farmer degree in 1979. Mr Reiley taught agriculture in secondary school and continuing education classes before working in a supervisory capacity. Up until the time of his death on March 16, 2008 Mr. Reiley bred new varieties of rhododendrons and azalea hybrids as well as managed a nursery.

About the Author
Charles Grippo is an attorney, producer, and playwright. He owns New Lincoln Theatre Productions, Holiday Road, and Charles Grippo Productions. In Chicago, he has produced plays by Neil Simon, David Mamet, and Kathleen Tolan. His plays, which include Sex Marks the Spot, Bedroom Follies, A Wife's Tale, Santa's Children, The Tooth of the Matter, Salvage Job, and Wait for the Wind, have been produced by theater companies in New York, Chicago, and California. His adaptation of Wait for the Wind was published in Hardboiled Detective in 1995. He has written articles on theater law for the Chicago Alliance for Playwrights and is currently working on a novel in the legal thriller genre about a female attorney. A member of the Dramatists Guild and director emeritus of Chicago Alliance for Playwrights, he practices entertainment and real estate law.

Useful Contract Templates With An Artists' Bias

This book provides a nice starting point for artists to use when engaging in negotiations for their work. He does a nice job explaining legal terms and the reasoning behind each clause. However, I find the contracts quite slanted in the artist's favor so if you are looking for contracts to use as the producer know that you'll probably want to adapt these further and have your own lawyer look them over before sending to an artist for signature.

Almost everything I needed

This book is amazing! Recently I was doing a theatre production and needed some contracts. This book was easy to understand, the CD made it so easy to get the contracts I needed in doc format and alter them as I needed.

Much of this book is based on Union workers, but again can be easily altered. My only quibble is the writers contract. I wish there was a better writers contract, something more simple. The one in this book will definitely cover most if not all the bases.

For the price, this book is totally worth having around. Especially if you are working in production

Level 2 (the Analytic subclass) expands the palette to be able to describe event-triggered behavior, critical to modeling exception handling.

The book explains the real meaning of BPMN's most basic concepts - like activity, process, and end state - essential to using the language correctly, and provides a step-by-step methodology for going from a blank page to a complete end-to-end BPMN model, developed from the top down in a hierarchical structure. From the top-level diagram you can see on a single page exactly how the process starts, its possible end states, what the instance represents, and communications with the Customer, service providers, and other processes. From there you can drill down to see the details of any part of the process.

Thie popular first edition of this book was published in 2009 based on the draft BPMN 2.0 specification. This second edition is based on the final BPMN 2.0 specification. Although the diagram elements have changed little since the first edition, both the methodology and style sections have been completely rewritten.

The second half of the book, the BPMN Implementer's Guide, is completely new. It puts the focus on the XML serialization of the diagram, for both non-executable and executable process models. It details the BPMN 2.0 metamodel and XML Schema, and describes the BPMN-I Profile, a set of serialization rules that facilitate interchange of BPMN models in the Analytic subclass between tools. It also explains how BPMN 2.0 describes execution-related details, such as process data and data mapping, services, messages, and human task assignment, illustrated with an example executable process created in Bonita Open Solution. It concludes with guidelines for implementers on how to align executable design with business-oriented top-down process modeling.

The book is lavishly illustrated with over 100 BPMN diagrams, and the BPMN Implementer's Guide section contains many XML examples as well.

Although BPMN is widely accepted as the language of choice for business process diagrams, few process modelers know how to use it correctly or effectively. This book shows you how. It explains the shapes and symbols you need to know, and which ones you can ignore. It provides a prescriptive, top-down methodology for turning a blank page into a complete process model. And it explains the elements of BPMN style, principles of composition that make your models not only correct per the BPMN 2.0 specification but easily understood without reference to attached documentation. The Method and Style approach allows BPMN models to be shared across the business, or between business and IT, revealing the process logic consistently and unambiguously from the diagram alone.

The second half of the book, the BPMN Implementer's Guide, is addressed to developers and BPMN tool vendors. It explains the XML underneath the shapes and symbols, including the BPMN 2.0 metamodel and schema, the Descriptive and Analytic Process Modeling Conformance subclasses, and the BPMN-I Profile for interoperability between tools. Few tools serialize BPMN correctly, but the Implementer's Guide shows you how, both for non-executable and executable process models.

The Method and Style section is completely rewritten from the first edition, incorporating feedback from hundreds of students in BPMN training. The BPMN Implementer's Guide is brand new in the Second Edition.

Good content but major editorial issues with the Kindle version

I haven't finished reading the book yet, but the content is sound and very useful to acquire that practical experience on how to structure and define conventions for your enterprise' business processes. Overall, definitively a book worth reading.

However, I am pretty disappointed with the Kindle version - and in fact I am considering asking for a refund:

the figures are too compressed and the symbols, and in particular the labels, are illegible!!!!

This is a major issue because the diagrams are very important to follow the text and are useful for a quick post-reading review of the entire book.

It's a real pity that they fell so short in the Kindle version after the author has put so much effort into the content.

The author's content does a great job of laying out BPMN for the reader. However, the images in the Kindle version are very grainy and of poor quality. They are readable, but could be so much cleaner. However, thenKindle price is significantly lower making this a fantastic bargain.

This is a great book to learn using BPMN 2.0 correctly, it analyzes several items by examples. If you have any doubt about BPMN, this book has the answer. However in this Kindle version, the quality of images is poor, it should improve.

Excellent Book on Exadata!

This is a very comprehensive look at Exadata with many helpful commands, queries, graphs, and images. It starts out easy and becomes more advanced as you progress through the chapters. Most chapters stand by themselves - so you can learn different subjects at any pace, or even just leverage a query or two.

- The first chapter assumes you don't know anything about Exadata and explains all of the components that make of different Exadata machines (including graphs comparing different machines).
- The next two chapters discuss RAC on Exadata (includes many helpful RAC commands) and Exadata Storage Cells in depth including various CellCLI commands.
- There is a chapter on the smart scan & using the flash cache with many helpful queries, comparison graphs, as well as initialization parameters.
- There is a very detailed look at HCC (Hybrid Columnar Compression) with exactly how it is stored and how it works. It includes comparisons for various compression levels showing consistent gets vs. db block gets.
- There is a chapter on 12c and Exadata (I wish this one was a bit longer) that includes some of the new features including pluggable databases.
- There are chapters on Networking, Backup & Recovery, and Managing Exadata with OEM 12c (Cloud Control).
- There is a very helpful chapter on migrating to Exadata and a detailed chapter on patching (careful).
- There is a chapter on Tuning including queries to check and leverage the new features on Exadata as well as two advanced chapters on the Smart Flash Cache & Flash Configuration as well.
- It finishes with Tools and Utilities that include different O/S commands and outputs, OEM 12c, and SQL queries and their outputs.

Overall, if you are an Exadata beginner it will take you to the next level. If you are more advanced, it will fill in some of the gaps you may have in various areas and help you to become the expert. Well worth reading!

Well done, for the first installment. This is only the first few chapters of the now popular serial books that charge per chapter. Not worth the investment. My advice, don't start!

this is a best seller?!
By Books are a uniquely portable magic
According to my Kindle if you remove the book cover, table of content, copy rights, acknowledgment exc., out of 154 pages you are left with mere 113 pages of actual story, out of which around 30-40 pages describe a single intimate scene full of "i OWN you" kind of BS and over done cliches. There is no relationship building up to that scene (they literary jump to bed on their second encounter without knowing anything about each other). There is little to no plot (apparently all that is saved for the sequel books) and they charge $8.00 for the print version...really???

Freakonomics / Super Freakonomics shows you how the world works. Think Like A Freak shows you how to better live in the world.

If you're a fan of Freakonomics and Super Freakonomics, you'll love this book. Here's why:

Like many other people, after reading both of the Freakonomics books, I felt like I learned a ton, but I wasn't sure how it would apply directly to my life.

And that's okay. They weren't writing a self help book, and I read their work because I was genuinely curious in understanding how the world works.

But this book departs from their usual method of explaining how the world works and instead shows you how you can better live in the world.

And that's why I believe this is their best book yet.

Here's a little summary of what I learned:

1. In one chapter, the three hardest words in the english language, they talk about one of the main problems that plagues people today - the inability to say "I don't know." And they show you how it's a deadly combination because "cocky plus wrong" is a recipe for disaster. They then show you how to avoid making this mistake. They even give a word for word script you can use.

2. In another chapter, "WHat's your problem," they share the story of Kobayashi and how he became a professional hot dog - and food eater. They walked through his entire process and how he went on to eat 50 hot dogs when people thought eating 30 was impossible. And even though they're talking about hot dogs, you'll see how this can apply to everyone.

As an example, back when I started creating videos for Social Triggers TV, a friend of mine told me they were filming about 6 videos a day. And I thought, "Well, I'm new at this ther's no way ill get there." And I would film 3 videos a day. Eventually, as I got good, I got to the magic number - 6 videos in a day and I felt like I was on top of the world. Until I spoke to another friend who told me they do 15 or 20 videos in a day. I was SHOCKED. But I went back to the drawing board, refined my process, and eventually got up to 17 videos in a day.

I'm being vague here, mainly because I want you to read the book. But it's funny seeing how the same process I used to increase my video production was used by the hot dog champ as well.

3. And my favorite part of the book is when they talk about what they call "the once and done" technique. If you're a non-profit, you'll LOVE reading about this because you'll see how you can potentially increase donations a drastic amount by using this simple marketing tactic.

And that's it.

Great book and I suggest you buy it and read it.

Are you willing to start thinking like a freak? A great book for approaching life in a creative way.

Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed reading this book. The way that the writers can intertwine different stories to make valid points is remarkable. It really does a good job of proving by observation how some things in life seem irrational, but ultimately make a lot of sense.

The only problems that I have with the book are the length, just over 200 pages, and it rehashes a lot of stuff that they go over in other works. This book is easy enough that you can probably read in one or two sittings and it is very captivating throughout. I really enjoyed the anecdotes they use to bring across the point of the book that everyone can benefit by thinking differently about the world (i.e. think like a freak).

One of the main things that I liked is how they describe the way children ask questions and are so curious about everything. Children don't have a set worldview and are eager to learn by asking a lot of questions. Parents often dismiss these questions when it might be valuable to see the world through a child's eyes and challenge set it stone opinions or thoughts.

The writers also make a good point about how the three hardest words in the English language are "I don't know" and how it should be okay to say these words. By applying these words to our lives, we will first of all lie a lot less and more importantly be able to demonstrate a willingness to find out answers to questions we simply don't know.

As I stated before, I wish that this book was longer, but I really did enjoy all that was written and would recommend "Think like a Freak" for those interested in challenging their current worldview and seeking to approach life in a creative way.

ESSENTIAL READING IN AN ELECTION YEAR DOMINATED BY INSANITY

I read the first Freakonomics and loved it. Somehow missed the second one, but WOW! Was this one great. Levitt and Dubner, a prominent economist and journalist respectively, are dedicated to the notion that decisions and actions should be based on fact, not supposition, strongly held belief, or political theology. In previous books, they have demonstrated their approach to solving world problems. In this one, they attempt to teach readers how to do it themselves.

Yes! Transform those strongly held but false beliefs into fact-based operating principles. What an amazing and refreshing concept! Especially after watching the political debates. I found the authors' insistence on nibbling at the edges of world problems and tackling doable tasks rather than pitching limited resources at conundrums that CAN'T be solved by mortals very refreshing. I also found Levitt and Dubner's just saying out loud that quitting is OK. Not only that, it's the right thing to do for many reasons, not the least avoiding dumping vast resources into solutions that won't work.

I read someone saying in a review of this book that it was sociology, not economics. Maybe, but I doubt ten readers could understand it if if was a "pure economics" tome. My first career was in economics. I've got a couple of degrees in the field and was the economic analyst for Santa Clara County (where San Jose CA is) back in the day. When I was working on my PhD many years ago, I could see that the mathematical branches of economics were becoming the high-status subsets of the profession. Yet they described reality less accurately than the kind that used words. I quit that PhD program when I realized what was happening in the field made no sense. That's when I found out quitting can be a good thing.

During this period, I chatted with a fellow whose PhD was in econometrics from one of the Ivies––he was a member of the anointed few. He told me that the best econometrics could do was predict the direction of an economic change, up, down or stays the same, not the amount. So, had Levitt dragged out the math, probably no one would know what he was talking about and it wouldn't yield any more accurate facts than the chatty approach. Freakonomics and Think like a Freak are blessed by Dubner, who can write the conclusions up in terms we can all understand. Stories are the best way of teaching/explaining. I don't know that the authors succeed in their task of giving people the tools to think/act based on fact, but the attempt sure is fun and interesting.
