My Students and I Love This Book

I have been using this book in my Grade 12 ESL English class and for my regular Grade 12 English class at our local college for five years now. It is an amazing step-by-step guide to writing a research/term paper.

The book has two sections:

Part One leads students through each stage by teaching the skill, practicing the skill in a variety of interesting exercises, and taking that step in their own paper (the final product of the text/course). The final chapter in Part One is an overview to guide students through future papers.

Part Two: The authors have gathered articles for three general themes (Risk for Change, Globalization, and New Technology). They introduce the theme via activities and develop students' depth of thinking through the articles. Usually academic journal articles are very difficult for students to read. These are more readable, very intriguing and a good start to doing research. Finally, a list of research questions based on the articles are presented. Most of my students choose to create their own research questions based on the theme we study and add research from sources outside the book. I find the themes lend themselves to a very broad range of specific topics.

As a teacher, I keep finding more and more ways to use the book even more efficiently. I change the theme I teach every term so that it is fresh for me and keeps students from using previous students' work in any way. This is a write-in workbook, so in our college only new books are allowed.

Tip: Have students put flags on each chapter and on the theme you use for ease of understanding how the whole process fits together.

Helpful exercises, not so great readings

I have used this for an advanced community college ESOL class that focuses on writing a research paper. The first half the book has helpful exercises that require students to evaluate and revise thesis statements, evidence to support points, and so on. Unfortunately these exercises are tied to the readings in the second part of the book, which are not especially well chosen or well-written.

The main reason I no longer use the book is that it teachers APA format while the the college-transfer English class that my students are preparing to take will require them to use MLA.

I used this book for my English class, and I must say, the lessons you learn from this book can be used beyond the classroom. I've been able to write research papers using this book as a guide and reference. One of the best investments in my undergraduate career.

About the Author

Elliot Aronson is one of the most eminent and versatile psychologists of our time. He is the only person in the 120 year history of the American Psychological Association to have won all three of its major awards: Distinguished Researcher (1999), Distinguished Teaching (1980), and Distinguished Writing (1975). In addition, among his many honors are the Gordon Allport Prize for his contributions to the betterment of intergroup relations, and the Donald Campbell Award for distinguished research in social psychology.

In 1981, he was named Professor of the Year by the American Council for the Advancement and Support of Education. Inducted in 1992, he is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences. In 2007, he was named a William James Fellow in commemoration of a lifetime of creative contributions to scientific psychology.

Simple and to the Point

Great book! I want to read it again, and this time take notes. I might read it again when I take a Social Psychology class, instead of just reading it for fun. I'd recommend it to anyone who wants to gain self-knowledge. Social Psychology is all based on experiments, experiments in which regular people, just like you or me, do mostly the exact opposite of what you'd expect. The most interesting part for me was how people constantly try to justify what they say and do and what they see others say and do, with dire consequences for their able to question, think rationally, and be open-minded to other ideas than the ones they profess and believe.

LOVED this book as an undergrad... Still have it 20+ years later...

"The Social Animal" was a required textbook for a social psychology class I took as an undergraduate. I studied under Robert Cialdini (sp?) who, himself, is an incredible social psychologist. While I've long since rid of the great majority of my text books, after 23+ years, I still have this book (an earlier version of course).... If money weren't an issue, I'd by the updated version in a heartbeat... For anyone interested in how individuals act in social situations, this is an incredible book. No doubt, this much more recent version holds even more wonderful information... Until it becomes available via Kindle or the price lowers greately, I'll hold on to my very outdated version. :)

I read Social Animal in 1976 for class. Read it again in 1982 for repeat of class. I still had my book from those years but I wanted a new copy. You filled the bill. Thank you. I highly recommend this book for Everyone's reading and education. Classic textbook and should be in every well equipped Library

If you develop Joomla templates, you need this book

Finally, a book on Joomla templates written by a member of the official Joomla project, Angie Radtke.

If you have used Joomla, you already know Angie's work. She designed and developed the Beeze templates that come installed with every Joomla distribution since Joomla 1.5.

This book does a great job looking under the hood of Joomla's template architecture. She goes over how to tweak templates with CSS, how to use template overrides, a chapter covering MooTools basics, and how to modify the Beeze templates that come with Joomla. If you already develop Joomla templates, you need to buy this book because it will greatly expand your skill-set.

I have been developing custom Joomla templates since 2007 and this book taught me several new tricks, like how MooTools works, create better error pages and best ways to modify the CSS used in Joomla error messages, etc.

What the book doesn't do is provide step-by-step instructions on how to create a Joomla template from scratch. (Although there are plenty of good online tutorials that can show you how.) I would not recommend this book to Joomla newbies and folks who do not have a good understanding of CSS and HTML. You don't need to know PHP and JavaScript to get a lot from this book, but it certainly helps if you do.

Overall a great book that deserves a place in every Joomla developer's library.

Agonizing - a definite "skip"

Agonizing.

This book is about Joomla templates, right? It says so right on the cover. So, out of 278 pages of real "stuff" (excluding introduction, index, appendix), why are the first 90 pages devoted to everything but Templates?

Author Angie Radtke has great qualifications, but if I wanted to know her opinion about website accessibility, color balance, PHP basics, CSS and HTML basics, the aesthetics of font selection, and general website design advice, I'd have bought a book about, oh say, "Website Design."

Here are some things I just don't need to be told in a book about Joomla templates:
- "In many cases the choice of colors is determined in advance by the corporate design of the client."
- "People who are blind tend to have well-developed acoustic as well as tactile senses..."
- "Firebug is one of the most glorious inventions for template designers."

With that said, the other 180 pages of the book do a pretty good job of explaining the role of templates and how to use them. The last 60 pages walk the user though a productive, detailed exercise of designing the front end of a Joomla website and illustrate template use in a rewarding way. If anything, those 60 pages are the nugget of value in this book. (In fact, if I had to take a guess, I'd say Ms. Radtke wrote the last 180 pages, was told by the publisher to make it longer to justify the target size and price of the book, and that she then added the first third, but that's just me.)

I took my lumps on this one and proceeded to the Joomla "Programming" book in the same series, which I liked very much, so I haven't searched more for templates-only guides on Joomla.

An odd mix of the elementary and the complex

I'm a beginning level web developer who has created a basic Joomla website but wanted to learn how to customize a template for increased style control. I've looked at several Joomla! templates and found that they are typically composed of many different files, making it almost impossible to figure out where to start*. I was hoping that this book on Joomla templates might explain how these are typically set up, but was disappointed in this.

Many rather basic topics are covered in this book, but Radtke often inexplicably uses advanced undefined terms and concepts in the midst of elementary explanations, leaving beginners in the dust. For instance, on page 37,in the context of the introduction of HTML5, Radtke says "The new semantically significant elements are particularly interesting," with no further explanation (I have a clue, but this could have been stated in much plainer language). On page 38, when she explains that css statements can be added in external files (already knew that!), she provides a code sample to accomplish this, but doesn't mention where this code would be placed among the many template files. A brief explanation of how style sheets are integrated into a Joomla website would have been nice here. It is also unfortunate that while this book was copyrighted in 2013, it does not discuss either of the default templates packaged with Joomla!3 (released in 2013), but instead deals with the old Beez2.

As there are not very many reference books available for Joomla!, this is still a useful reference for those of us who prefer to learn by reading. The table of contents shows the broad scope of this book, and dutiful perseverance will still reward relative beginners with some information useful at that level. However, it could (and should) have been so much better....

*A refreshing exception is Jaxstorm-Blue, with all of its css in one file, making it a good learner's tool.

Highly recommend!

In an age where we believe people can be understood by their self promotion and ramblings on the internet, this book offers fresh and timeless perspectives on people and business by a legend in the executive search business - Russell Reynolds. I recommend the book on account of it's many memorable anecdotes that are really an accomplished entrepreneur's business lessons. His insights are informed by a lifetime of experience and particularly from the vantage point of evaluating and recruiting the best executives in the world over multiple decades.

As someone who has worked with executive recruiters in the past (including some of the firms discussed in the book) I enjoyed hearing Reynold's unique perspective on evaluating professional talent.

"Heads" also provides a fascinating glimpse into an inspiring life lived by an indomitable personality. The fortunate reader is advised by an older, entrepreneurial, courtly, and intensely relational mentor... and the reader benefits!

I was very moved and inspired by "Heads". You could tell from the book that Mr. Reynolds had "a ball" and continues to have a ball "working."

I underlined many passages from "Heads," including the following:

- "I've always been an optimist, and I believe that you have to spend money to make money"

- The quotes from Leon Levy and Mr. Reynolds' story about Armand Hammer.

- "What follows is the story of the best years of my life, along with lessons learned along the way and how anyone... can adapt them to his or her own life and career."

- The way you and Debbie (with her "intelligence, charm and keen social antennae") worked together

- Mr. Reynolds' Hank Higdon and sailing stories

- "The most successful people have balance in their lives. They have achieved an equilibrium that allows them to have a satisfying work life in the context of good health, solid family life, good friends, and financial stability."

- "People who grow into really great leaders are usually givers as opposed to takers. Their basic orientation is to help people become successful -- to take an interest in what others want and to help them discover what they are truly capable of achieving."

This book is not only a "road map" for anyone in the executive recruiting business, but a compass/road map to success for people of all ages - especially for a guy like me at 62 years of age!

Short but powerful

Very suggestive prompts to ignite your imagination. Most of them draws a compelling picture in your mind to use as a seed to develop in your way. I've bought quite a few books on this topic because sometimes I need a little push to escape the empty page paralysis, and this one is my favourite so far. With only one hundred prompts, it falls a bit short, but the topics are interesting enough to revisit. I've used some of the prompts already, and I'm quite sure I'll go back to them to explore other possibilities.

Bottom line: this book can help your stories start rolling. It delivers what it advertises.

About the Author

Al Arens, founding author of this textbook, was the PricewaterhouseCoopers Professor of Accounting Emeritus at Michigan State University. In addition to writing books on auditing, he was a coauthor of computerized accounting supplements and he was actively involved in the continuing education of practitioners with local and regional CPA firms. Al was a past president of the American Accounting Association and a former member of the AICPA Auditing Standards Board. He practiced public accounting with both a local CPA firm and the predecessor firm to Ernst & Young. He received many awards including the AAA Auditing Section Outstanding Educator award, the AICPA Outstanding Educator award, the national Beta Alpha Psi Professor of the Year award, and many teaching and other awards at Michigan State.

Randy Elder, who has served as a coauthor of this textbook since the 8th edition, is Professor of Accounting at Syracuse University. He teaches undergraduate and graduate auditing courses, and has received several teaching awards. His research focuses on audit quality and current audit firm practices and he served as the team leader for American Accounting Association Auditing Section PCAOB research synthesis teams on audit confirmations and audit sampling. He has extensive public accounting experience with a large regional CPA firm, frequently teaches continuing education for a large international CPA firm, and is a member of the AICPA and Michigan Association of CPAs.

Mark S. Beasley, who has also served as a coauthor of this textbook since the 8th edition, is the Deloitte Professor of Enterprise Risk Management and Professor of Accounting at North Carolina State University. He has taught undergraduate and graduate auditing courses, and has received several teaching awards including membership in NC State’s Academy of Outstanding Teachers. He has extensive professional audit experience with the predecessor firm to Ernst & Young and has extensive standards-setting experience working with the Auditing Standards Board as a Technical Manager in the Audit and Assurance Division of the AICPA. He served on the ASB Fraud Standard Task Force responsible for developing SAS 99, the ASB Antifraud Programs and Controls Task Force, and the Advisory Council overseeing the COSO Enterprise Risk Management Framework project. He recently completed over seven years of service as a member of the COSO Board, representing the AAA.

Chris Hogan is a Professor of Accounting in the Eli Broad College of Business at Michigan State University. We are thrilled to continue the Michigan State connection started by Al Arens. Chris teaches a graduate auditing course and her research focuses on internal controls and integrated audits, audit firm client portfolios, and the impact of regulation on audit markets. Chris has auditing experience with Price Waterhouse, one of the predecessor firms to PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLP. She has served in multiple leadership roles within the American Accounting Association, including serving as President of the Auditing Section and on the Audit Committee of the AAA.

A great book

I have been an auditor for the last seven years and I can assure you that Prof. Arens book is excellent. Even if you have a working experience with audits you will find that this book is not the usual "text book"

The Global paperback is almost like the hardback.

I got the global paperback version with the birds on it. It is mostly like US hardback edition except the questions in the back of the chapter is different. What I do is borrow a friends book, scan the questions with my phone, and then I'm all good to go with homework. If you can do that you'll save some money.

I am just starting to use the text but it is an extremely easy read while being quite informative.

The end-of-chapter summary along a varied selection of questions from review type multiple choice to the thought provoking variety ensures that the material gets to sink in.

I would recommend this text to anyone who is starting to study Auditing for the first time.

Kipling was once the literary lion of the English-speaking world; within a generation his fame, as a poet at least, was all but extinguished. In a tendentious foreword to this edition of his complete verse, Kaye makes an unconvincing attempt to answer the usual charges of imperialism, racism, and war-mongering. Her attempt to rekindle enthusiasm for Kipling's verse will doubtless prove even less successful. While the poet's political attitudes played a substantial role in the eclipse of his literary reputation, no amount of coaxing is likely to convince a modern reader that these rollicking tales and ballads in verse are the creation of a writer touched with the "divine fire" of genius. One must be impressed, however, with Kipling's masterful storytelling ability, his gift for cadence, and the sheer number of verse forms he mastered. The poems are printed in chronological order, with an index of first lines. General readers and informed laypersons may still find these poems appealing.

When Rudyard Kipling died in 1936, he was considered second to none as a poet. Years before, when Tennyson was Laureate, he had described the young Kipling as the “only one with divine fire.” His poetry is as varied as it is beautiful; among eulogies for the dead and celebrations of life are also character assassinations and comic masterpieces. Very often, the most powerful and evocative poems are the most personal and humane; together, they comprise a compelling and deeply moving portrait of the man.

A comprehensive collection

... Collections of Kipling's poems have been published many times over the years, but many of them were not complete. This collection includes many not found elsewhere. Many of his poems are about the British Army or the British Empire, but there are also poems on other topics. Some of Kipling's poems are better known than others, e.g., "Gunga Din." A few have been set to music, e.g., "Mandalay" and "Gentlemen-Rankers." In some cases, particular lines are well known such as, "Oh, East is East, and West is West, and never the twain shall meet (from "The Ballad of East and West") or "the Colonel's Lady and Judy O'Grady are sisters under their skins" (from "The Ladies). Some of the poems were concerned with the poor treatment of British soldiers for whom Kipling was a champion, including "Shillin' a Day," "Back to the Army Again," "The Last of the Light Brigade," and "Tommy" ("I went into a public 'ouse to get a pint of beer, the publican 'e up an' sez, 'we serve no redcoats here' ").
Overall, it is a good, wide-ranging collection of poetry covering an extended time period. The collection is recommended for all age groups, although some poems might have to be explained to children. The poems were written at a different time in history, and readers should be aware that some of them may express prejudices and language of that period ("for she knifed me one night, 'cause I wished she was white, and I learned about women from 'er," from "The Ladies")

Largely forgotten today, to many, Kipling is an outdated imperialist with racist and sexist views, and should be left to moulder on the shelves of public library back collections. To others, he is a great poet, with a sympathetic ear for dialogue and an uncanny ability to weave the atmosphere for any story or poem.
I side with the latter.
I've liked Kipling years back. He writes poetry as easily as he does his stories, with wit, snappy soundbites, and both the ability to make you laugh and cry.
Famous for his writings of the soldiers, for his fairy tales, he isn't much in demand these days, except maybe recommended for children, which is rather a shame, because he wrote many interesting works, be it in verse or novel.
Those who call him racist had probably not read past the first few lines. Even in more blatant works like "Gunga Din" or "Fuzzy Wuzzy", he writes with a certain respect for the natives. And even in his colonialist days he was more of its critic than its trumpet. Such an attitude is obvious in more obscure works like "We and They", or "Hadramauti", where an Arab voices his dislike for the Englishmen.
Also there are his historical pieces, like "the Dutch in the medway", describing the humiliating defeat of the British at sea, and "the Roman centurian's son", a very poignant piece about an Roman soldier being called back to Rome after decades in Britan. More whimsical and lively pieces (as well as the satire he was known for), like "The way through the woods", "Pagett, MP", his pieces for chapter headings, as well as inspiration poems like "If -".
Darker works like "the Storm come" shows that he is no warmonger; his "Recessional" predicts the dissolution of the empire which he nearly outlived, and his lament for his son in "the Children" is both moving and tragic.
I suppose there's not much to be said -the poetry is loud enough on its own, and I hope my cruddy penmanship doesn't affect your view on Kipling -or deter your from reading his works.

Bad organization still can't ruin great poetry

I will admit that the organization leaves a lot to be desired - you start out with the Departmental Ditties, and the Barrack-Room Ballads and Boer war poems appear together, but elsewhere you have works from the Jungle Books and story collections like Rewards and Fairies and A Diversity of creatures arranged all anyhow. There are few annotations other than Kipling's own, and no biographical context. Some of the poems, such as the superb "Philadelphia", require that you have read the stories they were drawn from to understand. The positive side of this, though, is that this book is a gateway to less famous, but wonderful books like Rewards and Fairies, Plain Tales from the Hills, and Diversity of Creatures. But above all else the poetry is great. It is not just war and colonialism - there is tragedy, love, symbolic allegories of mankind, humorous sketches, and styles that evoke emotions and associations deftly and movingly. If you can't get the whole Kipling library (which I'd like dearly to own) this book is a great way to own all his verse at once, albeit in a disorganized way.

About the Author

DR. DONALD R. CHAMBERS, CAIA, is the Associate Director of Programs at the CAIA Association, the Walter E. Hanson/KPMG Professor of Finance at Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania, and Chief Investment Officer of Biltmore Capital Advisors. Dr. Chambers previously served as the Director of Alternative Investments at Karpus Investment Management. He is a member of the editorial board of The Journal of Alternative Investments.

DR. MARK J. P. ANSON, CAIA, CFA, CPA, PhD, JD, is a member of the CAIA Board of Directors and the President and Chief Investment Officer of the Bass Family Office—winner of the Family Office of the Year award for 2014–2015. Dr. Anson previously served as President and Executive Director of Investment Services at Nuveen Investments Inc., Chief Executive Officer of both the British Telecom Pension Scheme and its wholly owned asset management company in London, Hermes Pension Management Limited, and Chief Investment Officer at California Public Employees' Retirement System.
