About the Author

Waheed Uddin is Professor of Civil Engineering and Director of Center for Advanced Infrastructure Technology (CAIT) at The University of Mississippi. A former pavement expert for the United Nations, Dr. Uddin has contributed to highway and airport infrastructure management projects in the U.S. and many countries worldwide. He is a pioneer in airborne laser mapping and satellite imagery applications in transportation and disaster impact assessment and coauthor of Infrastructure Management.

W. Ronald Hudson is the Dewitt C. Greer Centennial Professor of Civil Engineering Emeritus at The University of Texas at Austin and Senior Consultant at AgileAssets, Inc. He is a pioneer in developing and applying management systems to pavements, bridges, and other civil infrastructure assets. Dr. Hudson is co-author of Modern Pavement Management and Infrastructure Management.

Ralph Haas is the Norman W. McLeod Engineering Professor and Distinguished Professor Emeritus in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada. He holds country's highest civilian honor, the Order of Canada and the highest academic honor, Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. An innovator in pavement design and civil infrastructure management systems, Dr. Haas is coauthor of Modern Pavement Management and Infrastructure Management.

Monocle Vienna's Whitewashed Take on History

A study in how to rewrite history, Monocle's Vienna includes a wide variety of essays on the city's history including some very major gaps. Marie-Sophie Schwarzer's laughable history of the city suggests Vienna attacked an "influx of people from different backgrounds" but notes the "tide turned during the Second World War." (Yup that's it on WW2, which is presented as a passing hiccup).Now though she affirms the city is a "magnet for immigrants from all corners of the world." What's missing? Just the fact that of Vienna's 200,000 Jews all but 2,000 were murdered in the Holocaust. Plus the fact that Vienna became a cosmopolitan cultural center largely thanks to those Jews (Freud to Mahler on down). You can try to write Jews out of history. But if you do you erase the driving force of Vienna's golden age, and the horror of its downfall.

*This book, Meditation And The Bible, is still one of the most important books I own. After so many years, I still refer to this book when wanting to have an academic view of a verse or a word, refresh my memory on the importance of meditation or just wanting to revisit his conversation on the behavior and spiritual habits of the prophets.

**The book is broken down into many sub-topic of meditation:

1. The Tradition-- the behavioral habits of the prophets
2. The Prophets-- A look at historicity, philology and the Divine Names
3. Verbal Archeology-- The expanded use of and the interconnection of the Psalms, prophetic passages, and psychological preparation.

If there is one thing you'd find consistent throughout this book, it's this: this book is essentially the study of and the use of words: the Divine words, in particular. Rabbi Kaplan uses and extensive bibliography to support his thesis of the meaning of words as it pertains to passages ("parsha").

*** This is an academic book. It can be read as a stand-alone book or as a reference for a bible study. I suggest that a separate notebook be kept just for this book as it is very in-depth and there are exhaustive conversation regarding root words, and passages.

**** I can't over emphasize this book. Rabbi Aryeh Kaplan, of Blessed Memory, produced one of the most important scholarly works to the Bible, since the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls. Meditation is a largely misunderstood subject and often dismissed as a relic of Oriental mysticism, or worse, as an introduction to the occult as stated by the conservative Christian wing. What it is, however, is an invaluable tool for spiritual growth.

As with all things that help us to grow, wisdom and self-discipline are the keys. Meditation and the Bible, provides the foundation and Rabbi Kaplan's book, Jewish Meditation: A Practical Guide provides the exercises.

"Meditation for Fun and Prophet"

The lore is that Rabbi Kaplan, the author, died at the tender age of forty-six because G-d felt Kaplan had exposed enough of His secrets and decided it was time to recall this particular soldier. This book does nothing to undermine that hypothesis. Rabbi Kaplan, arguably the most prolific, cogent, and accessible of writers on Jewish esoterica and mysticism, explores how the Torah's Prophets used meditation as a tool to foster their prescience. The book also serves as an incisive gloss on aspects of the Torah, explicating the esoteric meaning underlying various elements of it. The section on Psalm 119 alone is worth the price of the book. Kaplan's objective in all of his works is to get at the heart of Judaism, to use the form to understand the substance. Meditation and The Bible is an important part of his oeuvre. Irrespective of one's religion, this book instils the sense that the reader is being let in on secrets of The Bible previously unknown to all except true Initiates, whoever they might be. A must have for the home baker!

I don't write many reviews but couldn't pass up writing about this book. I love to bake and I have more cookbooks than I know what to do with. I buy them and they end up on a shelf, really fancy space fillers. I can assure you, that will not be the fate of this book. I don't know where to begin.

The photos are amazing! Not only are they beautiful but take you through a photo tutorial of many of the recipes. I like to see what a recipe should look like when it's complete. The info is thorough and gives you so many useful tips. It takes things that look like they should be difficult and makes them doable. The few recipes I've tried out so far were easy enough for just about anyone that can read and all turned out amazing. My biggest issue with the book is deciding what to try next. In many cookbooks I buy there is a small percentage of recipes that I actually use or want to try, the ones that hooked me into buying it. The rest of the recipes end up being fillers that I never look at. This might be the first book I've gotten where I want to try everything! I can see this book as easily becoming one of my favorites.

Expected perfection

I didn't know what to expect from this book. All three collaborators have my highest regard, and Iuzzini's last book is well worn on my shelf. But since he's more a tv chef now I wasn't sure what would show up, and as it turns out a vast set of basics and classics with modern knowledge of technique and ingredient, with his charming personality. Roughly 160 recipes are included with beautiful pics, so you'll have plenty to play with or drool over. This is not Dessert Fourplay with its modern quirkiness. This is comparable to Lebovitz's Room for Dessert. I consider myself an advanced pastry chef and will get plenty of use out of it, but this book is perfect for both the beginner and intermediate cook.

An absolutely gorgeous book! Perfect for novices to expert bakers - something for everyone!

Sugar Rush is a big, beautiful book. It’s absolutely gorgeous and with holiday shopping just around the corner it would make a perfect gift for you or someone you really, really like! Seriously, if you have any sort of foodie on your holiday list, look no further.

The book opens with an introduction by Dorie Greenspan (I know!), which that right there should tell you how wonderful this book is! That is followed by a getting started section that covers ingredients, equipment, tools, and bakeware.

The rest of the book is divided into nine sections: Custards and Creamy Desserts; Eggs and Meringue; Caramel; Cakes, Cupcakes, Brownies, and Muffins; Cookies, Tea Cakes and Biscuits; Tarts, Cobblers and Crisps; Yeast Doughs; Glazes, Frosting, Fillings and Sauces; and Building a Balanced Dessert.

Each section opens with the general basic info about the desserts in that section. I marked so many things to try:

Custards and Creamy Desserts: Vanilla Cream Sauce, Ginger Spice Ice Cream, Coffee Cardamom Pastry Cream, Toasted Almond-Cinnamon Panna Cotta.

Eggs and Meringue: French Meringue, Swiss Meringue, Italian Meringue (who knew there where this many meringues!), Crunchy Meringue Cookies, Bittersweet Chocolate Mousse, Banana-Rum Mouse, Espresso Marshmallows, and Browned Butter Crepes.

Caramel: Dry Caramel vs. Wet Caramel (again, had no idea there types of caramel), Candied Hazelnuts, Caramel Pudding, Earl Grey Creme Caramel.

Cakes, Cupcakes, Brownies, and Muffins: Crumb Cake, Chocolate Cupcakes, Olive Oil Sponge Cake, Flourless Chocolate Meringue Cake, and Spicy Malted Chocolate Chipotle Brownies.

Cookies, Tea Cakes and Biscuits: Killer Chocolate Chip Cookies, Chocolate Snowballs, Fluffy Buttermilk Biscuits.

Tarts, Cobblers, and Crisps - Sweet Tart Dough, Citrus Tart Dough, Chocolate Tart Dough, Caramel-Walnut Tart, Smoky Chocolate Ginger Ganache Tart, and Gooey Chocolate-Caramel Tart.

Yeast Doughs: Brioche, Pecan-Caramel Sticky Buns, and Fresh Yeast Donuts.

Glazes, Frostings, Fillings and Sauces: Shiny Chocolate Glaze, Buttercream with 7 variations, and Candied Citrus Peel.

Building a Balanced Dessert: combining several of the desserts into one amazing dessert, for example: The Vanilla-Banana Caramel Cake using Vanilla Sponge Cake, Banana-Rum Mousse, Caramelized Bananas, and Candied Hazelnuts!

I can not say enough good things about this book. It is like a textbook for baking, with gorgeous step-by-step photos. There are mother recipes that you can learn and master and then move on to the more compacted recipes. Dorie Greenspan says it best in the intro when she states that she wishes she had had this book back when she was learning to bake. The thing is it’s perfect for people who are just learning to bake, people who bake occasionally and want to step up their game, and those that bake regularly and want to learn new tips and tricks from a master pastry chef.

In brisk prose and with the confidence of his vast knowledge of the era, Dallek interprets the life of the simple man who, having unexpectedly and with little experience assumed the presidency when FDR died, surprised everyone by so skillfully shouldering huge burdens. In his day, that meant ending the war with Japan (by authorizing the bombs that leveled Hiroshima and Nagasaki), ordering American troops to repel the invasion of Korea, firing Douglas MacArthur and facing down the Soviets. It also meant protecting the New Deal from erosion, dealing with striking labor and taking unprecedented steps to desegregate the government and armed forces. Just listing these achievements makes clear why Dallek, like other historians, places Truman high on the list of American presidents. Like so many other biographies in the splendid American Presidents series, Dallek's little book is now the best starting point for knowledge of Truman's life and for an astute assessment of his career. The first paragraph of Dallek’s yeomanly contribution to the American Presidents series pontificates that, with the Roosevelts and Wilson, Truman is one of the “great or near-great” twentieth-century presidents. What follows suggests that he was the best of those four, anyway. FDR had told him nothing, even of the atomic bomb that he would have to decide whether to use. He got no immediate credit for his administration’s real achievements, such as the Marshall Plan. His party fractured beneath him when he headed the ticket in 1948. He got blamed for FDR’s failings, such as employing the Communists Joe McCarthy demagogued about, and for an early career beholden to crooked Kansas City Democrat Tom Pendergast. That he very quickly adapted to wartime leadership, prevailed in 1948 by sheer energy and common-man appeal, seized initiative against security risks before Congress did, and was the clean cog in Pendergast’s machine went largely unappreciated almost until his death. Dallek leaves little doubt that you must disagree with Truman philosophically to consider him less than a damn good president. --Ray Olson

Robert Dallek is the author of several bestselling presidential histories, including Nixon and Kissinger: Partners in Power; An Unfinished Life: John F. Kennedy, 1917–1963; and the classic two-volume biography of Lyndon Johnson, Lone Star Rising and Flawed Giant. He has taught at Columbia, Oxford, UCLA, Boston University, and Dartmouth, and has won the Bancroft Prize, among numerous other awards for scholarship and teaching. He lives in Washington, D.C.

Nice brief bio of Harry Truman

Harry S. Truman's life story in a short, accessible biography. That's the premise of The American Presidents Series, and this is one of the most recent entrants in the stable. The late Arthur Schlesinger, Jr. was the series editor. In his introduction to each book in this series, he says (Page xvi): "The men in the White House express the ideals and values, the frailties and the flaws, of the voters who send them there. It is altogether natural that we should want to know more about the virtues and the vices of the fellows we have elected to govern us. As we know more about them, we will know more about themselves."

The book begins by noting that, traditionally, the 20th century presidents deemed to be great or near great include: Teddy Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Franklin Roosevelt, and Harry Truman. The "Preludes" section notes that (Page 1): "On the face of things, Truman's high standing is surprising. . . . Truman was notable for his ordinariness."

The book begins with his family background, his early years, his service in World War I, his early (failed) effort at a haberdashery business, and his decision to move into public life. The book well describes his moral dilemmas at one point: the corrupt Pendergast organization was willing to sponsor him for elective office. What would he do? Eschew the support of the machine? Or use its support and still try to stay clean? He did the latter and his political career began. By the way, to give a sense of The American Presidents' series, we come to see how and why FDR selected Truman as his Vice-Presidential partner by page 15!

Truman's time in the White House. . . . We see him reflecting on whether or not to use the atomic weaponry against Japan. We see him trying to adjust to the Post-World War II Cold War/Iron Curtain era. We see him trying to navigate between left and right in domestic politics, and sometimes seeming to drift. One intriguing line (Page 37): "And yet Truman was disinclined to confront the country with the emerging dangers he saw from Soviet aggression. . . ." This is a subtheme of the book, with the author, Robert Dallek, noting that on a number of occasions, Truman seemed to back off confronting difficult issues. It creates, in fact, a tension within this volume between the author commenting that Truman warranted his high rating by historians and then noting his occasional avoiding tough issues.

The story of his unexpected victory in 1948 over Thomas Dewey, the Berlin Airlift, the Korean War, and his rapidly deteriorating public approval. . . . It's all here, including his active post-presidential career.

A very nice brief introduction to Henry Truman. This book has motivated me to consider buying one of the larger biographies of the subject and exploring his life more deeply. . . .

About the Author

In a career spanning more than seventy years, Ray Bradbury, who died on June 5, 2011 at the age of 91, inspired generations of readers to dream, think, and create. A prolific author of hundreds of short stories and close to fifty books, as well as numerous poems, essays, operas, plays, teleplays, and screenplays, Bradbury was one of the most celebrated writers of our time. His groundbreaking works include Fahrenheit 451, The Martian Chronicles, The Illustrated Man, Dandelion Wine, and Something Wicked This Way Comes. He wrote the screen play for John Huston's classic film adaptation of Moby Dick, and was nominated for an Academy Award. He adapted sixty-five of his stories for television's The Ray Bradbury Theater, and won an Emmy for his teleplay of The Halloween Tree. He was the recipient of the 2000 National Book Foundation Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters, the 2004 National Medal of Arts, and the 2007 Pulitzer Prize Special Citation, among many honors.

Throughout his life, Bradbury liked to recount the story of meeting a carnival magician, Mr. Electrico, in 1932. At the end of his performance Electrico reached out to the twelve-year-old Bradbury, touched the boy with his sword, and commanded, "Live forever!" Bradbury later said, "I decided that was the greatest idea I had ever heard. I started writing every day. I never stopped."

The poet laureate of science fiction

This is the first collection of Ray Bradbury's stories I ever read, and it still rocks! I was only 13, and it immediately put me into his own, lyrical and yet dark world: lovelorn sea monsters, pining away for foghorns; time-traveling big-game hunters who accidentally change our history; spaceships dispatched to collect a piece of the sun; dictatorships that outlaw any form of eccentric behavior, such as *not* watching television---a scary premise, indeed, since we're practically in that world now; and more. Bradbury's delight in telling stories, inventing fabulous glimpses into other worlds as well as our own, radiates from every page. His work is warm, but it is not overly sentimental---he is unafraid to let a story end very badly for its characters, if it should help him to make the point he has in his mind. Nor are his tales all scary and dark---one or two are positively hilarious. This is not just highly recommended---it is urged that you rush out and purchase it...

'Fear no more the heat of the sun...'

While these stories are excellent, most don't fit neat pigeonholes within Bradbury's work. Only some are SF. I've discussed them not in order of appearance, but alphabetically.
"The April Witch" - Cecy is plain-faced, 17, and odd - in fact, a witch from a witch family. She can take possession of any creature, live through its experiences - but she wants romance. So lovely Ann Leary finds herself going to the dance with the boy she's not speaking to...(If you're interested in Cecy's family, try _The October Country_ and _From the Dust Returned_.)
"The Big Black and White Game" - Set in 1940s Wisconsin. Once a year, two pickup baseball teams face off on a long summer day, just before the Cakewalk Jamboree, and somehow the white team always wins. But this year...hmm. If this appeals to you, look for other Bradbury stories like "Way Up High in the Middle of the Air".
"Embroidery" - A nuclear test scheduled for five o'clock has the women sitting on a porch worrying over fancywork rather than supper. An interesting parallel is implied, as one woman, having made a mistake early on, rips out the design...
"En La Noche" - Mrs. Navarrez has been grieving at the top of her lungs for days over her husband's departure for the army. The other sleepless adults in the tenement are growing desperate. When Mr. Villanazul comes up with a suggestion, guess who gets to carry it out.
"The Flying Machine" - The emperor of China sees a great wonder in the dawn - a man has built a kite that lets him fly! But the inventor isn't the only far-sighted man in this tale.
"The Fog Horn" - The old lighthouse keeper has told his assistant of many strange things, seen out here on the edge of the sea, to prepare him for these autumn nights when the strangest thing of all appears. One of Bradbury's best.
"The Fruit at the Bottom of the Bowl" - Acton just killed Huxley with his bare hands in Huxley's own house. The background of the murder is provided as Acton retraces his actions, trying to remove all traces of his presence. But even obsessive people can't always get everything.
"The Garbage Collector" - He liked his job, until civil defense created procedures for atomic attack.
"The Golden Apples of the Sun" - The ship is heading for the sun, to scoop up some starfire and take it back to Earth. A man may be killed by frost if he fears fire too much...
"The Golden Kite, the Silver Wind" - The mandarin has brought his chief advisor - his daughter - a problem. Kwan-Si has built a wall shaped like a pig - which threatens the mandarin's city, built in the shape of an orange. Each town is built and rebuilt, choosing a shape in response to one another. The final solution is ingenious. If you like this, seek out Barry Hughart's _Bridge of Birds_; Number Ten Ox's native village once had a similar problem. :)
"The Great Fire" - Nobody could quench it, because it was inside cousin Marianne - she's staying until October, and going out on dates every night. Father says he'll have been in the cemetery for about 130 days then...
"The Great Wide World Over There" - Cora, who always wanted adventure, has spent her life in the valley, going to town only twice a year. Illiterate, she can't escape through books. But now her nephew's coming to visit.
"Hail and Fairwell" - Willie looks 12, but he's 43. This isn't a variation on "Jeffty Was Five"; his mind is normal. While he can get by, he can't settle anywhere for long...
"Invisible Boy" - Charlie's staying with Old Lady while his parents are away. But she likes having him around, and sets about using witchcraft to keep him.
"I See You Never" - Mr. Ramirez left Mexico City for San Diego a little over two years ago. He's built a life for himself - a good life, by his lights. His landlady even believes that a good workingman has a right to get drunk once a week if he likes. There's only one problem...
"The Meadow" - That's only what it used to be. Then the movie producer came along, and said, Let there be Paris! Let there be Constantinople! And lo, hundreds of cities came into being. On the outside, it's a movie set. To the night watchman, it knocks the 'real' world into a cocked hat.
"The Murderer" - He's being interviewed by a shrink: the victims are yakking machines: telephones and the like. This used to be SF...
"The Pedestrian" - A companion piece to _Fahrenheit 451_. The writer walks for pleasure every night, so the cops have picked him up as a suspicious character.
"Powerhouse" - The woman, riding with her husband through the desert to her dying mother, never needed religion. During a great storm, they take shelter at a powerhouse in the desert. Bradbury explores the nature of faith and being alone a little, here. A quiet story, but richly textured as most of his work is.
"A Sound of Thunder" - Time Safari, Inc. advertises that if you name the animal, they'll take you hunting. After all, what difference could it possibly make to history - whether a dinosaur died a natural death or from a bullet, a few million years ago?
"Sun and Shadow" - A fashion photographer, trying to use a picturesque cracked wall as a backdrop, encounters Ricardo Reyes, who objects to his neighbourhood's poverty being treated as a stage set. A gem.
"The Wilderness" - Leonora and Janice are facing their last night on Earth. Tomorrow they catch the rocket, to meet their menfolk on Mars.

Bradbury's SF strength is in the humanity...

You've probably heard a half a dozen Ray Bradbury stories without even knowing it. His tales of space flights, Martian expeditions, and strange occurences on our own planet are all classics. While "Martian Chronicles" is arguably the best collection of Bradbury stories, this book also shows the amazing talent of Bradbury. His ability to mix the human with the fantastic makes for incredible stories.
This book collects several of the best stories Bradbury ever created in one volume. There are several books that group Bradbury stories together, but few contain the raw number of stories as this one.
My own personal favorite Bradbury story is in this collection: "A Sound of Thunder." This short tale of a time-travelling dinosaur safari is an amazingly powerful look at the wonder and consequences of time travel and personal behavior. The story is easily consumed by the youngest reader and just as easily debated by science fiction scholars for hours. I first heard this story on an audio tape during a family car trip--hearing it inspired me to read other Bradbury stories. To me, Bradbury will always be "A Sound of Thunder" and that's quite a reputation to have.
One of Bradbury's longer shorts, "Frost and Fire," is also included. This is an amazing tale of the rapid development of humans on Mercury. Rapid in that everyone grows quickly and dies young. Set against the backdrop of a planet that allows only a few brief minutes of freedom on the surface before the residents must hide from the scorching heat or blistering cold. The story can be appreciated from a pure SF perspective or just from the human side--Bradbury creates realistic worlds in the most fantastic location.
Two other stories are also stand-outs: "The Fog Horn" and "Here There Be Tygers." Saying anything about the actual plots would give away the stories, but I will say they both present unexpected twists that will have you thinking twice about your own normal everyday lives.
As a first introduction to Bradbury this collection is excellent. It gathers together a wide variety of his stories from various sub-genres and has enough to keep readers busy for a while. Ultimately you'll want to read other story collections, but this book will give you a taste of things to come.
For Bradbury fans who haven't read some of these stories I probably don't need to recommend the book at all--by now you've already clicked on a purchase link and had the book sent to you.
For everyone else I can only urge that you try Bradbury. Even if you aren't a science fiction fan, Bradbury is a very approachable author and his works cross the traditional boundaries of science fiction. This isn't nerdy Star Trek or hard-core Neuromancer. His stories are human and that's what makes them universal. Rocketships are entirely optional.
