A "must read" for Ali fans

Muhammad Ali has always played a large part in my life. He showed me that being black did not make me inferior at a time when almost everything and everyone said the opposite. This book gave me a fresh perspective on his achievements and his beliefs, thanks to contributions from sources as diverse as Joe Frazier and Cheryl Tiegs. The stories are wide-ranging and informative. Some were laugh out loud funny (very embarrassing when you're on a train). Some were depressing (stories surrounding Ali's entourage and the Holmes fight almost made me cry). There are even some from people who don't like Ali or see him as someone worthy of praise. All of them gave me a deeper, more rounded insight into a man that I viewed with awe and reverence. I started the book seeing Ali as some kind of distant super hero and ended it seeing him as a warm, caring human being with the same flaws and insecurities as anyone else. Along the way I laughed a lot and learned even more. The book is funny, engaging, and inspirational...just like the man himself.

Inspiring champion; awe-inspiring human being

MUHAMMAD ALI: HIS LIFE AND TIMES, through accounts of noteworthy admirers and close-associates, chronicles the life and times of a living legend. Long-time pugilistic journalist and award-winining author Thomas Hauser has painstakingly compiled a wealth of information to support what seems to be his thesis: that no matter how amazing Muhammad Ali was in the ring, his worth as a boxing champion is far exceeded by his worth as a citizen of this world. In 500 pages of text, we are able to follow Ali in his growth from a brash, boisterous heavyweight contender to a highly devoted man of God who brings happiness wherever he tarries. For fight fans, all of the classic bouts from Liston I to Manilla are covered; anecdotes to be especially savored are those leading up to the first Liston fight, where Ali was arguably out of his mind in the extent to which he went in taunting his opponent, as well as the unadvised beating Ali suffered at the hands of Larry Holmes in the twilight of his career. Most interesting were the sections of the book that dealt with Ali's relationship with Malcolm X and the Nation of Islam at the beginning of his first reign as heavyweightchampion and his conscientiously objecting to fighting in Vietnam. It is obvious that Hauser is captivated by his subject and looks upon Ali with great reverence. At times this can lead to the feeling that the author went to great lengths selecting interviews which sanitize and exagerate the legacy of Ali. Still, so many different people can't be distorting the truth; it is undeniable that Ali has a heart of gold and it brought a smile to my face everytime I read about him performing magic tricks for children, or meeting with fans, no matter what, to show his appreciation for their humanity. It is tragic and anger-provoking that Ali was taken advantage of by so many people that he loved and provided for, but it is a blessing that his spirit exists in this bio for future generations to learn of.

Informative but slow read

The book did provide me information that I did not know about Ali. But the book was mostly a series of direct quotes from persons involved with Ali with limited narration by the author to tie the quotations together. It made for a long, slow read because many of the quotes had information that I found not relevant or were repititve information. I expect a biographer to sort out the duplicative material and provide a much better flow. Further it should be noted that the book was written 20+ years ago and was somewhat dated. There was about a page of postscript from the author regarding the time lapse but no update on Ali's current situation or status.

Robert C. English is owner of the consulting firm Daystar Computing and a former Research Associate at the National Center for Digital Government at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

A must read for those interested in OSS and information / Internet commons

This is an excellent book. It is a systematic empirical examination of open source software projects and the various factors that shape collaboration. It is careful and measured throughout. The authors aptly explain and apply the Institutional Analysis and Development framework pioneered by Elinor Ostrom. This framework is very useful for organizing the various factors being studied. The authors present and examine a treasure trove of data. The analysis yields some expected results, such as their confirmation that successful collaboration depends on "hard work, good administration, and leadership." It also yields many surprising results, such as their finding that the "programming skill of the developers ... does not seem to play a strong role in determining success versus abandonment, apparently because a large majority of OSS developers are highly skilled professionals." There are many other important findings. In my view, this is a must read for those interested in OSS and information / Internet commons more generally. An added bonus: the book is incredibly well-written and easy to read! The authors worked very hard to explain everything, from the theoretical framework to their research motivations to the limitations of their work to future research directions. The book is a model for rigorous social science research. I know that I will use it as a guide for my own research.

A cut above

I read this story as it was being posted on Meljean's site. I was one of the readers who'd been waiting for Frozen for ages, unaware of her struggles in finishing it, and loved the way we got to experience the writing process through her chapter posts and 'blogs of shame'. Once it was finished I promptly bought a Kindle copy and re-read it.

This story is not set in any of Meljean's other worlds, so is a great introduction to her work for those unfamiliar with the Iron Seas or Guardian series (which are both must-reads, in my opinion). It doesn't have the depth of world building one typically sees in her work (and she is totally up front about this), but that wouldn't have worked with the novella format anyway. The story takes place over a couple of days and focuses almost exclusively on two characters: Eric Gulbrandr and Olivia Martin, who are colleagues with a History. She arrives at Eric's cabin with papers to sign hours before a snowstorm is due to hit. Eric, plagued by demons both intangible (a curse) and literal ('moon hounds'), is NOT happy to see her. Thrills ensue.

Although the story is a supernatural romance, because it is a supernatural romance by Meljean Brook there are some interesting philosophical questions at its heart, especially about the nature of will and choice. What if you are impelled (or compelled) to do something that you would otherwise want regardless? How does that change things? I highly recommend this book if you're looking for an entertaining and exceedingly well-written (and well-priced!) read that is a cut above your typical supernatural romance.

The gnashing of teeth froze me out of enjoying this book

I was totally irritated by this book and ended up paging through to the end. As another reviewer said, it went on way too long. And there was far too much inner exposition by the heroine gnashing her teeth the entire time. If the author had written about the lump (ice) blocking her throat or surrounding her heart one more time, I was going to scream. And, in fact, there was a simple solution to their conundrum that they both wanted. Just get on with it already! I'm giving this two stars instead of one because at least it was edited and not full of typos.

4.5 stars - Icy control plus cursed desire - Frozen ends up hot and sweet while skirting the edge of darkness

Erik has frozen Olivia out since their one passionate kiss. Despite the cracks in her heart from his icy civility, Erik still stars in her hottest fantasies. When Olivia is sent on an errand to Erik's doorstep, she expects his usual cool response but instead receives a much worse greeting. And when she is unable to make the hasty retreat that his reaction inspires, and is instead forced by circumstances to remain with Erik, Olivia will discover the reason for the walls of ice he's built between them and just what is going to happen to her when they fall.

First off I have to say that I love the real back cover blurb for Frozen to the bottom of my 'pun-ish' heart.

Frozen, which is the long awaited by me standalone story that Brook finally finished by offering it in installments on her blog, is a bit different from her other paranormal romances (and her steampunk ones too) in that the worldbuilding is minimal with just a dab of Norse myth and a curse as the foundation, and also different in that the story is told from the heroine's first person POV - not knowing what the hero is feeling is key to the story because it gives a different spin on the old mate bond trope.

I loved both of the leads. The cursed Erik, as he struggles to control the curse, is noble and the glimpses into his anguish for what it will make him do, and how it will cost him the normal things that he wants, make him vulnerable and appealing even as he can only see himself as a monster. And the leading lady, Olivia, is resourceful and smart, trying to find a better outcome to what seems like a no win scenario for Erik and trying to fight her fear by arming herself with knowledge so she can figure out the real parameters of the curse.

And I liked that even though the time frame of the story is short, the combination of the pair's backstory and that - while they are both essentially under seige by Erik's enemies and waiting for the curse to strike - there are enough normal moments and touches of humor that we get a glimpse of what the true dynamic of their relationship could be. If I had a nit with the story it would be that both characters' decisions about the other's feelings are a cause of some of their problems, but it is a short story and, hey, they do need more than just a measly old thousands of years old curse, a couple of homicidal enemies, and that pesky old mate bond standing in the way of their HEA.

So the bottom line is that I really liked Frozen both of the times I read it - first when anxiously waiting for the next installment to appear on Brook's blog and this second time when I finally had the whole thing in my greedy little hands - and for a story that had the potential to go someplace dark, the ending is really sweet.

I've been drinking tea as long as I remember. Some of my fondest memories are having tea parties with my grandmothers when I was young. We used a tiny china tea set (that I still have) and very milky tea! I'm still a tea lover and drinker to this day.

DK Canada has a great Food and Drink Boutique with a selection of food and beverage titles for the foodie in your life. One of their newest titles - The Tea Book by Linda Gaylard - definitely caught my eye!

Gaylard is a tea sommelier - " the tea sommelier has the challenging task of convincing tea drinkers that there is much more to tea than a mug and a tea bag. Beyond the bag there is mystery, history, travel, industry, culture and ceremony: a whole new world to explore."

I have tried some loose teas, but I do generally use the same brand of bag and a mug, so I was up for learning something new and venturing beyond my usual fare.

Gaylard's book starts literally from the ground up, detailing the anatomy of a tea plant, the growth and harvest. (From seed to plant ready for plucking can take 5 to 7 years) I truly had never thought to consider the process of plant to cup before - up to nine processes! I drink quite a bit of tea - and am happy to report there are quite a few health benefits to tea, including stress relief and higher bone density. Who knew? Herbal teas have long been known to have medicinal properties. Gaylard has included a 'wheel of wellness' - matching an ailment (headache, cough etc) along with a tea that might help.

I loved this fact - tea bags were an accidental invention. In 1908 a tea merchant sent his clients samples in a silk drawstring bag. They clients brewed the tea in the bags instead of removing the leaves. And tea bags were born! I've discovered while travelling in the US to say 'hot tea' - which is sometimes met with puzzled looks. This stat explains those looks - "80% of tea consumed in the United States is in the form of iced tea."

Brewing and infusing techniques, including equipment such as infusers, water temp, type of water, infusion time and measured amounts to use are covered in meticulous detail, accompanied by charts, coloured pictures and drawings.

Just as tea with my grandmother was an occasion, so is it across many cultures. Gaylard explore ceremonies and traditions in numerous countries. (The British afternoon tea was familiar and a favourite)

A large chapter on tea recipes was an unexpected bonus! There are cold, hot and alcoholic tea recipes, using all types of tea. How about making your own bubble tea?

The Tea Book is a complete, comprehensive guide to the world of tea from start to finish - seed to sipping. Gaylard knows her tea - and I now know a lot more. And I think I'm ready to supplement my bag and mug with some loose tea! The Tea Book is another great reference book from DK - filled with great clear, concise information, complemented by colour photos and drawings.

A Must-Have in Your Kitchen

This book is one of those beauties that every tea lover must have in their kitchen. My favorite spread in the entire book is the Wheel of Wellness. The outer ring shows ailments such as headaches, stomachaches, arthritis, and sleep issues. The inner part of the wheel shows the various teas that can help you. Everybody knows that tea has tremendous health benefits and this book is loaded with the science and history behind those benefits. There are recipes from all the world, maps of cultivation locations, and gorgeous tea sets.

Great for any Tea lover!

This is a great book for any tea lover or someone wanting to learn more about tea! It has been beautifully written by the author Linda Gaylard, divided into sections with great photos throughout! There really is a science behind really great tea and the author breaks down everything you would want to know about ALL kinds of teas. The history of tea, tea cups from around the world, each country facts, timeline, favourite teas etc. The different ways tea can help our bodies and the difference between loose leaf and bagged tea. So much information through this book. I love that you can easily pick up this book and read anywhere within, it isn't a book that needs to be read from cover to cover. It is a great coffee table book. I have always wondered about the process of growing, harvesting, the plantation to teapot and this book lays it out super simple and easy to understand.

To finish off this great tea lovers book is 75 recipes! Everything from Honey Lemon Matcha, Iced Tea, Hazelnut Plum Delight to Iron Goddess Vodka and Kombucha! So many teas to choose from it really is hard to know which to try next.

I give this a 5 out of 5 stars! A Tea Lovers Heaven! A great Gift Idea!

About the Author

Merold Westphal is Distinguished Professor of Philosophy at Fordham University. He is author of God, Guilt, and Death: An Existential Phenomenology of Religion and Suspicion and Faith: The Religious Uses of Modern Atheism and is coeditor (with Martin J. Matusik [hacheck over s, acute accent over i] of Kierkegaard in Post/Modernity.

Uneven handling of difficult material

Not much detail is presented in Westphal's book, nor are the contours of dialectical development laid out very clearly. A basic outline of the Phenomenology is followed, but without much attention to the crucial transitions between dialectical stages. The section on consciousness, (i.e. sense experience, perception, and understanding), is adequate; the section on self-consciousness, (i.e. master-slave, unhappy consciouness), is the weakest and murkiest.
Probably, the best section concerns the latter stages of spiritual progression, (i.e. religion, absolute knowledge). Westphal discusses developments here in a general context of Christian theology, showing how Christian themes are taken up and reproduced in philosophical terms. A traditional issue arises at this point: Has Hegel abandoned phenomenology (description) for Christian metaphysics (transcendancy). The author presents a thoroughly secularized interpretation of of spirit's fulfillment and Absolute Knowledge. Spirit's ultimate return to itself transpires on the this side of the temporal divide instead of the transcendent side. It's an historical and temporal event in which spirit recognizes itself in others in a mutual display of love and recognition. It's not a transcendent occurrence in which exteriority is somehow overcome. Just how this mutual recognition also includes recognition of nature as its own ontological creation is not clear to me from Westphal's text; yet some such must be present if Absolute Knowledge is to truly take place.
In the author's opinion, Hegel's error lies not in a departure from the phenomenological method, since correctly understood in its secularized interpretation, no metaphysics is involved. Rather, Hegel's error lies in the naive belief that this final spiritual stage of description was actually being realized in 19th century Prussia! In short, his mistake was not philosophical but historical. Westphal's reading of Hegel works fine as an interpretation congenial to modern secular readers.

great second half

this book truly exists from page 80 to 220. that's when the author starts talking about the transition from the transcendental realm of correspondence to the historical and on., page 80 should have been page one. there's been tons written on recognition so i wanted this book specifically for "history and truth". i got it after page 80. he's knowledgeable and clear and systematic in his approach. but just realize that you're buying the second half of the book with regard to history and truth. i'm glad i got it; that's still a good number of pages on the subject.

Classic Guide to the Zone System

For more than 20 years, The New Zone System Manual has been the classic introduction to the Zone System, a standardized method of exposure and development of black & white photography that was developed by Ansel Adams. Adams taught the Zone System in workshops, and he never intended his own Basic Photo Series to be a beginner's instructional manual. In addition, Adams' prose style is erudite and often insightful, but it is rather opaque to a beginner. The Zone System Manual was written by Minor White in 1961 to make the System more comprehensible, and it was extensively revised and updated with coauthors Richard Zakia and Peter Lorenz in 1977, and updated again in 1990.
I am surprised that this book is apparently out of print, and I hope some publisher will soon make it available again. There are other books on the Zone System, but I know of none as organized and understandable.
