My boyfriend needed this book for a class he was taking. It was well written, obviously, but a little on the dry side. It's tough to be "Wide Awake" if the book isn't interesting. But they can't all be, right? Overall, it served it's purpose and it was less expensive going through Amazon than the campus bookstore.

As a first year neuroscience graduate student I had to hack through Martin's neuroanatomy textbook. Not until a month before my comprehensive exam did I discover this book - my girlfriend found a copy out on the sidewalk, left behind by a departing medical student probably - filled with hasty underlines and unintelligible scribbles in bic pen. But, it was a godsend. The quality of this text is immediately apparent to anyone who has tried to learn from it. If you begin from ignorance, use this book! If you already know everything go ahead and show off to yourself that you can understand Martin or for that matter a straight atlas of brain sections with no text at all! But for those who need concepts, themes, integrative explanations, this books is by far the best thing available.
The basic idea of this book is to provide a rudimentary brain atlas of real photographs with annotations, and then to go through each functional system separately and with schematic figures. The book is bound in waterproof material and even the pages are tough enough to withstand being dragged around, dripped on with coffee or with formaldehyde, etc.
I am not kidding, people, this book is supreme for its kind. We should thank Lennart Heimer for turning neuroanatomy from an arcane, incoherent list of latin names, into a simple, coherent, and fascinating course of study.

Literate, artistic, cinematic... the ultimate graphic novel

I got the original comics when they were first released, being a fan of Frank Miller. I hadn't heard of Geof Darrow at that time.

Since then, I have picked up this book for myself to replace a worn copy of an earlier reprint (this printing has the cover art, which is most welcome), and for everyone I know who doesn't already have one. It's that good. You'll read it, put it down and stare into space for a while, then immediately start reading it again. It's that good.

Now, if it was just for the awe-inspiring, OCD-derived skills of artist Darrow, the book would be visually impressive enough. Nowhere is there the clean, spartan lines of a mainstream superhero comic. Clutter is everywhere, and it is as lovingly detailed as are the bizarre residents of this dark future. Car seats and footwells are littered with junk food wrappers, spare parts, toys, and utensils. Cars parked on the street are dented. Trash heaps are strewn with recognizable artifacts, not only from the modern day but things that should be available any day now. Japanese characters and English exist in a side-by-side melange on buildings and packages. It's a confusing swirl that somehow makes sense. Oh, and yes, it's hypersexual and ultraviolent; human life is cheap. But that's a reflection of the culture. Even if not a single shot was fired, it's clear that the individual means little or nothing to the people running the world. As Barbara says, "I hate flesh."

But you also have the literary talents of Miller, who has in this work exceeded even the high bar he has set for comic-book writing. It's not only entertaining, it's important. I'd rank this as the graphic novel equivalent of George Orwell's 1984-- the book that I think people HAVE to read these days. There's deep meaning in the simplest scenes; the dream sequence (about a third of the way through) is classic Miller.

And people talk like-- well, like people. (Except for one amazingly odd thing: Little or no cussing. A biker, about to strike a little old lady, says "You old so-and-so! We'll show you!" Somehow it makes it more eerie than if the characters had cussed like the South Park kids.) The book stays true to one of the most important developments of the cyberpunk style: No exposition. There is not a single panel that brings readers up-to-date on the social history, no asterisks in the speech balloons advising you to see some other comic book, no dialogue that infodumps in a way that no human being outside of a college lecture hall ever has. No. You're dropped into the thick of this universe and are trusted to be able to figure it out for yourself. You catch the middles of conversations, people speak in incomplete sentences, and the simple "whuff" when someone is punched says more than a multi-color, two-panel "SPLADAM!" Of course, the protagonist, Carl Seltz et. al., does keep up a running monologue. But it goes more to his mental state than to any understanding of this world's history.

The ending: both triumphant and depressing at the same time. How often do you see that happen?

Bryan Cranston IS a Life in Parts.

I purchased "A Life in Parts" with a mixture of excitement and dread because one never knows how an author - let alone an ex-spouse - will portray certain aspects of his life. I came away with a sense of relief and confirmation that - yes, Bryan is still the Bryan I knew when our meals consisted of whatever he could bring home from his job as a waiter or the 1,000 ways of preparing the bags of zucchini his mother left on our doorstep. The book reads...like Bryan.

Bryan's writing is unaffected by fame and fortune and is his own voice. He tells his story clearly, with exactly the right words for the situation and the precise amount of pages devoted to each "part" of his life. If his book seems to devote little to Breaking Bad or Malcom in the Middle, it's because those are just parts of the whole that is Bryan Cranston. The book is honest, witty, sensitive, funny, unapologetic, and heartbreaking. And that, too, is Bryan Cranston.

When reading, be prepared to laugh and cry, for this is a story of a man who came from sad circumstances, made the best of what he had (incredible talent), and stayed true to his dream. The book is a fast read, but you will find yourself picking it back up and rereading parts to experience them again and again. Bryan Cranston is a man who continues to live a life in parts, and it is my privilege to have been one such part.

A wonderfully canded look at his life.

I'm an actress so, reading an autobiography of an actor I respect is not uncommon for me.
This autobiography however, left me with the feeling that I actually knew who Brian Cranston really was and is.
I recommend this book for other actors. There are lessons to be learned within these pages because of
his honesty in dealing with his own difficulties with certain parts. Not every well-known and successful actor would be brave enough
to tell the world about some of these all to real experiences that all actors have had but would never admit. I applaud him and thank him for this.

Brilliant

This was such an entertaining and insightful book. I have always enjoyed Bryan Cranston's work. He is talented and a consummate actor. Who knew he was also a fantastic storyteller? A story filled with humor but also sadness as Mr. Cranston relieves his childhood and parents' broken dreams. It's an honest portrayal of the experiences and struggles he faced that made him the man and talent he is today. It's not your typical bio in the sense that it doesn't chronologically recount every aspect of his life. Rather, Mr. Cranston poignantly touches the most important parts of his backstory while beautifully weaving in the laughter and life lessons this history embodies. This is a must read and is hard to put down.

A classic on the history of the Cumberland Valley

This is my favorite book on early life along the Cumberland Valley (Middle Tennessee and lower Central Kentucky), especially after getting past Chapter One, which is an imaginary narration of an "early adventure" which seemed unnecessary. That is a small complaint though. The book has some really interesting information on all aspects of settlement of the area and I highly recommend it! Many of the details described are applicable to pioneer life in other areas east of the Mississippi as well, I would think.

I've seen this book referred to a number of times and finally got around to ordering it. I was thrilled by the wealth of detail about pioneer life. The seller was promp,t and the statement of the condition of the book was accurate. Would definitely use the seller again.

Dogmatic Theology at Its Finest

William Greenough Thayer Shedd states: "In theology the investigator has to do with God, Man, and the God-man." Shedd, (1820-1894, b. Massachusetts; son of a Presbyterian Theologian; Shedd graduated from the University of Vermont in 1839: theology and philosophy. Then Shedd entered Andover Theological Seminary. He later became professor of Systematic Theology: Union Theological Seminary) is known for herein, his greatest work: "Dogmatic Theology: 3 vol." He declares: "Theology, then, as the science of God, aims to obtain a knowledge of him that is free from contradictions, and is as profound as is possible, considering the nature of the subject and the limitations of the human mind." And Shedd helps the student know God in a more profound way that will inspire grateful obedience in the believer's life.

Shedd was an outstanding Reformed scholar and many rank him with the finest American Theologians: Jonathan Edwards and R. L. Dabney. He wrote with great care and precision with a focus on fidelity to scripture, ease of understanding, and usefulness for the reader.

Shedd delivered a readable and delightful set that flows with the beauty of doctrine that also helps make this a potent devotional tool. The professor provides essential dogma in a dynamic and majestic writing style that is both alluring and edifying. This set is unique, faithful, and powerful, loaded with powerful insights.
