Mini prints of Rackham's Fairy Tale Illustrations

This slim book presents 55 of Arthur Rackham's fairy tale illustrations from several of his books. The illustrations are reproduced on high quality paper. Almost every image is at least 5x7 or 6x8 inches in size and suitable for framing. While I don't usually recommend deconstructing books for their illustrations, this book is well-suited for the purpose and preferable to taking apart an older book for its plates. No fairy tales are presented, just the illustrations with their titles and sources. If you are a Rackham fan, buy one copy to take apart for framing and another one to keep on your bookshelf. Most of these illustrations are not available in any size for art prints. Many of the illustrations are not available in print in any other source at this time except for the original antique books in which they appeared.

True colors show true subtlety and magic of Rackham!

I heartily concur with the estimations of Rackham's value to the area of children's book illustrations. Look for Rackham's Mother Goose and Alice in Wonderland from Chancellor Press to introduce your little ones to his illustrations is book form, as well as Favorite Tales From Grimm. But my desire here is to point out the true color found in this collection of Rackham's illustrations. Beware, as some books republished with his pictures do not capture the subtlety of his use of color. He used dark colors and gently colored objects in all of his pictures. This book, along with Dover's other Rackham collections show his work in all its glory, the subtle and the grotesque simultaneously. A delight for any collector of Rackham, suitable for framing.

It is a very useful and interesting material. Lean Manufacturing and Logistics is a topic very popular but still literature is missing in this field. Out there in the book there are plenty of examples and theoretical concepts for Leans. Really new and actual content inside. It is just for the business I work in and consider it worth a purchase.

Thin, but useful

This little book is only 110 pages long, of which only 40 really concentrate on bow and arrow setup, tuning, and shooting; the rest is devoted to hunting, bow construction, and a bit of biographical info on Ferguson. And truthfully, it's not terribly well written. Ferguson's strength is as a bowman and teacher, not a writer. But those 40 pages contain a wealth of useful information distilled into almost everything the beginning barebow shooter needs to know.

More experienced bare bow archers may find a lot to disagree with here. For instance, Ferguson shoots only aluminum arrows, and thinks wood is just too variable and inconsistent. That alone will raise more than a few hackles. (Since this book was published, he's brought out his own line of carbon fiber arrows.) But even the most experienced archer will admit that there's a lot to be learned from an archer who can consistently place his shots the way Ferguson does day in and day out.

I have a few bones to pick with Ferguson over his conception of instinctive shooting. He claims that since people are very bad at a task requiring them to estimate distance in yards, it must therefore be impossible to shoot purely "instinctively." As anyone who has read Fred Asbell's books can tell you, that's a bit of a straw man argument. Instinctive shooters don't say to themselves. "Gee, that looks like about 27 yards..." any more than an outfielder thinks "that looks like about 30, maybe 35 yards" before throwing to second base. I'm returning to archery, having done a fair bit of recurve shooting with aluminum shafts and sights in the 1970s, and with a longbow and wooden shafts in the 1990s. I bought this book as a refresher in technique and tuning, and while thought I knew a fair bit about shooting barebow, I picked up more useful info from this book than I expected. I'd still recommend that the newcomer to barebow shooting start with G. Fred Asbell's Instinctive Shooting; Ferguson's book adds a different viewpoint, and a number of useful tips on tuning and shooting that complement the Asbell book.

A short but excellent book by the next Howard Hill

This book is a short and enjoyable read by a master that some would say is today's Howard Hill. Fellow Alabamian Byron Ferguson provides a clear description of his techniques of shooting the bare bow, as well as some excellent hunting tips. He relays a few good stories along the way.

The book is not very long, but Ferguson covers all necessary topics from equipment, technique, practice strategy, bow tuning, bow design, hunting equipment and hunting tips. in a few places, I would have liked just a bit more detail, and the black and white photos leave something to be desired. Those are the only reason I didn't give it the full 5 stars.

Must-read for traditional archery

I already owned the book. It was the first one I read on the subject of traditional archery, and it was and remains the foundation of my knowledge base for the sport. I think it would be helpful and a pleasure to read for anyone interested in traditional archery, at any level, so I purchased a copy from Amazon as a gift for a relative who was already versed in traditional archery. He has thoroughly enjoyed it. Of course, anyone familiar with the amazing Byron Ferguson would like this book. I haven't reached the point of becoming the arrow, and I don't know if I get that part, yet. Nevertheless, I highly recommend the book.

Start your own band!

I bought the first set of books in this series, Songbook 1, Level 1, for Guitar, Piano, Drums & Bass about two years ago so my boys (guitar, piano) and I (bass) would have something to play together. Two years later we have a 10 piece band made up of mostly youth (aged 12-18) that uses several songs from each of the books to make up a 90 minute set list. The books have worked perfectly to provide increasingly challenging material for the band to play as the youth have grown in ability. Sure, the parts in the lower level books are simplified and the arrangements not true to the original artists, but they sound pretty good when played, and the important thing is that they have real, entire, audience recognizable songs to play from the outset. Each book provides slightly more difficult material and introduces the youth to artists they will recognize for the rest of their lives. The Beatles, Ray Davies, Clapton, Santana, Morrison, Elvis, Muddy Waters, The Stones & many more. Our goal initially was just to play for ourselves and maybe on campouts, but by the time we got into the second book and found a drummer we had other kids coming to us wanting to join the band and perform for real audiences. Now we play for groups from 50-500 (for free, our performances are a service to the community, and we have no illusions of going any further than this); so, we now have our own little Glee-like band. If you are looking for a way to get a something like this going I have found no other series or set of books that does as good a job. The Fast Track books got us from beginners to a level of ability that we can now play more current & popular tunes from bands like Kings of Leon & Paramore in addition to those from the Fast Track series. Some of our older members are heading off to college now and being replaced by younger performers. The Fast Track books are where we start them. Its a rush to be in the car with the band when one of the tunes they know comes on the radio. The whole car will start rocking out to Evil Ways, Back In The USSR, or Surfin' USA. Well worth the $10-$15 for the book and CD for each part. You would spend way more than that buying separate songs for each instrument from a sheet music supplier and still have no CD to play along with. So, grab a couple of friends to play the different instruments, shell out the $50 to buy the first book for each part, and start jamming! Who knows, maybe we'll see you out there!

Good for learning some simple songs

I've been learning guitar for less than one year, and I travel a lot so small song books are a must for me with my Traveler Speedster guitar.

The songs aren't perfectly accurate, but they're a good start, and anyone listening will know what you're playing, with only the purists noticing the differences from the original recordings.

There's nothing worse than learning chords and scales without knowing how to use them in songs, so I use these books to apply the basic chords and scales to songs that I know. They're better than most tabs I've found on the internet, and I find standard notation easier to follow than tabs anyway. I find it much easier to stay in time with standard notation.

Learning these songs will make the early learning process more fun than just practicing seemingly pointless chord progressions and scales.

I bought another book first (I forget the title), and the first thing the author said was that it's important to have a foundation before tackling his book. He recommended the Hal Leonard Guitar 1 series as a basis, and I'm glad he did.

Their attempt to capture two top lieutenants of a Somali warlord resulted in a drawn-out firefight against hundreds of Somali gunmen. Bowden, an award-winning reporter for the Philadelphia Inquirer, where chapters of the book were first published as a newspaper series, tells the story through the eyes of the soldiers, capturing their ways and language. Unfortunately, Noguera Mendia's translation fails to portray their military jargon and social background. Expressions like "humvee" or "Hoo-ah" are left in their original form, devoid of meaning for Spanish readers. Moreover, mistranslations like "los intelectuales podian teorizar y escribir hasta quedarse sin pulgares" ("Intellectuals could theorize and write until losing their thumbs") for the original "Intellectuals could theorize until they sucked their thumbs right off their hands" are also common, showing Noguera Mendia's ignorance of American idioms. Finally, some sentences are inexplicably long and formal, slowing down the plot. Despite the occasional vale for "ok" and tio (literally "uncle") for "pal," Noguera Mendia avoids Castilian regionalisms. Notwithstanding the deficient translation, Noguera Mendia's research regarding military organizations is accurate, and this book promises to be a popular item in public libraries and bookstores.
