Decent book.

I found this book to be good, however it could be better. Some chapters are well written and others I feel like they're copied and pasted. I would have to sit and reread certain sections for minutes to understand what is written and the author keeps referring back to previous editions, making it all the more difficult at times to grasp. It would also be beneficial if the book were to come with an interactive website and if the cd was sold with it. Instead, you have to pay extra for it and I don't think that's right. It isn't a bad book, just one that'll take you some time getting used to.

Not all that interesting- it is a textbook, after all. It is well organized and as easy to read as any text could be. I was required to read it in its entirety before my class, which I did, and felt well prepared once I got to my class lecture day.

This book, in my opinion is the best one in the topic of local anesthesia.
This 6th edition is well written, just like the previous one, covering the whole aspect of local anesthesia. This book is important for every one dealing with local anesthesia in the dental field. The chapter of anatomy is marvelous. The book arrived in excellent condition.

Simone de Beauvoir (1908–1986) was a French existentialist philosopher, intellectual, and social theorist best known for her writings on existentialist ethics and feminist existentialism, as well as for her infamous polyamorous relationship with fellow French existentialist Jean-Paul Sartre. Great Teaching Text for Existentialism

This is an excellent and original work of philosophy, closely related to the contemporary ideas of Sartre and Merleau-Ponty, but quite unique and not reducible to their work. I find it to be one of the best books (indeed one of the few books) to use to teach existentialism in introductory classes. I recommend skipping the first chapter, because it is self-consciously "literary," (in an obscure way), and contributes nothing essential to the book. Chapter 2 is the core of the book, and it is an incredible and compelling piece of writing that brilliantly discusses the distinctive nature of childhood experience, and then develops a dialectic of "bad faith" that offers a sort of system for understanding personality types--ways, that is, of embracing (imperfectly) our freedom. The third chapter studies politics in a very thoughtful way, (though I find it is often lost on my intro students because they just don't have enough experience of political realities to appreciate the significance of what she is saying). This text is often wrongly belittled by commentators (and, indeed, de Beauvoir herself wrongly said disparaging things about it), but I think it is one of the classic texts of existential phenomenology and deserves to be widely read.

the Realm of Existentialism

"There is no more obnoxious way to punish a man than to force him to perform acts which make no sense to him, as when one empties and fills the same ditch indefinitely, when one makes soldiers who are being punished march up and down, when one forces a schoolboy to copy lines."

What will the modern man do when slapped in the face with the absurdity of his own existence? Become an adventurer, passionate, serious, intellectual? Where will his values come from when there are no values -- how will he create them out of nothing? Is it easier to adopt a game full of illusions created by someone else? de Beauvoir forces the reader to come face to face with the absolute absurdity of the human condition, and then, proceeds to develop a dialectic of ambiguity that will enable the reader not to master the chaos, but to create with it. This book will probably alter many well-rooted philosophical perceptions -- so, reader beware! I could have done without the dramatic image of how the Nazi's conditioned themselves to become insensitive to human suffering (de Beauvoir used as an extreme example), but oh well... This book is a keeper, and very quotable! Highly recommended, especially for those diving into the Realm of Existentialism! --Katharena Eiermann, 2006

Ms. de Beauvoir certainly writes with more clarity than her friend, Sartre. But it took me several readings of the first page to understand just what the ambiguity was that she was writing about! However, after that, I found her essays compelling and relevant to our current troubles. It is definitely a good time to review what she had to say. She still speaks to us!

Called Creative Core for a Good Reason

As with all of Jim Krause's books (jeez, there are 16!?), he methodically and thoroughly combs out what seems like a tangled hairball of information into logical, digestible bits with loads of visual examples. Unlike other books in this industry, he doesn't just pull in other designer's work, he custom-makes each example to more clearly illustrate each point. You can tell he's passionate about what he does!

This book is perfect for someone just starting out on the road to appreciating typography, from basic forms to how to wrangle paragraphs on a page, as well as an idea generator for seasoned (grizzled?) designers like myself. The author categorizes the information into chapters that would make teaching this a dream.

The breadth of typography information here is admirable. He covers everything from the smallest of details on letters (you learn how to locate the spur, ear, shoulder and TITTLE—among other parts—of letters), to the difference between a font and typeface (don't get me started), to paragraphs (and why large paragraphs should be aligned certain ways and set in certain typefaces) to page grids (and how to successfully break them). Side note: Being a self-proclaimed "dash nazi," I appreciated the callout of the differences between them (and no, they're not interchangeable).

There's a reason I have more of Jim Krause's books on my shelves than any other author. The reason is that his books don't stay there long; they end up on my desk and being used frequently. They're essential to this designer's toolbox.

A must have for the design student and seasoned veteran

No matter how seasoned a design professional you may be, I guarantee you'll learn some new material. I was about to jump into a new creative project and I picked up the book first to grab a new idea or two, but I ended up reading it cover to cover. When I did get back to my project, it was greatly influenced and my client loved my concepts - thanks Jim! I wish I had this book while going through Typography class in college. In fact, any college typography course should add this to their student curriculum. You'll probably find your students will love learning the principles, but will also retain more of the information well into their careers. The author often encourages further exploration of the material and that would easily translate into exercises in each chapter. It's also well rounded in its explanation of type terminology and the art of letters and working with words. Krause also reviews multi-word presentations along with text and layouts. I especially liked his section on punctuational correctness. And though I am not perfect, I can't stand when editors, writers and designers use straight quotes when they should really be using quotation marks. He has done it again! Another amazing publication by the talented, knowledgeable and humorous Mr. Jim Krause!

You can take my word for it. I have been a professional graphic designer for over 25 years, hold an MFA in graphic design and have taught graphic design, publication design, package design and design foundation courses at 5 colleges/universities. When talking with students of graphic design I tell them... “if you had only $30 to your name and had your choice between buying a meal, or buying a Jim Krause design book—buy the Jim Krause design book!” I could not stress to them enough, the significance of owning design books by Jim Krause...as reference, to grow and evolve their knowledge and skills as a designer and to inspire their creativity.

Every design book authored by Jim Krause contains thorough, essential information for designers of all levels. “Lessons in Typography” is no exception. Jim covers every detail of type anatomy, type creation/manipulation, using type with other type/images and explaining it all in an entertaining, attractive and easily understandable way.

Jim characterizes the mission of this book as building a better “appreciation” for type “because appreciation makes us look closer at things, and looking closer leads to greater appreciation, which makes us look ever closer...and on and on and on.” And he definitely achieves his goal!

“Lessons in Typography” goes so much deeper. It contains exercises to sharpen your skills, suggestions for creative work-flow and even how-to’s for hand-lettering. Jim carries his lessons through to context and talks about type as used in composition and establishing hierarchy in layouts. The illustrative possibilities of type are presented as well.

You will not find a more comprehensive approach toward the teaching of typography than this book, “Lessons in Typography”. A must have for every designers arsenal! Thank you for your gift Jim Krause!

Outstanding as a text

This text covers the field like no other, giving straightforward and thorough information on a difficult subject matter. Including treatment overviews in each chapter is a special benefit. The questions for each topic are helpful both to student and instructor. As an instructor, I highly recommend this book. I had difficulty attaining access to the website meant to accompany the product. Purchase of the book via Kindle means no CD.

Great User-Friendly Book

In this textbook, Freed writes in a clear and easy to read manner while including a lot of pertinent information. Many illustrations are included to give the reader an understanding of the patologies that cause motor speech disorders. Case studies are included and also many step by step instructions on evidence-backed therapeutic treatments. I will definitely be keeping this textbook for reference when my class has ended.

This is an excellent book for future speech-language pathologists. The book is easy to read and explains the material well. Each chapter explains all of the dysarthrias, as well as, apraxia. Overall great book!

Solid Introduction

I learned fluid mechanics from this book in college, tutored undergraduates with the help of this book in grad school, and used it as a reference for my advanced fluids class. In all cases, it was clearer and more understandable than other references I was recommended. I'm not saying this book is perfect - the description of the Navier Stokes equations, a fundamental concept in fluid mechanics, skips too many mathematical steps, as White is prone to do - but overall, if you are strong enough in math, this is a very good reference/first time book for fluid mehanics. White also has a good more advanced text on viscous fluid flow. If you are learning fluid mechanics for the first time, I would also recommend a Schaum's outline to supplement your textbook.

This makes instructors' life hard as he has to fill in missing steps for many solved problems in the book. After reviewing all the undergrad textbooks on fluid mechanics, I would recommend people to use Introduction to Fluid Mechanics by Fox and McDonald. This book can be easily read and followed by the student while leaving instructor(like myself) for more time to elaborate on theory in detail.

Universe twisting technology and threats abound

Vaughn Heppner in "The Lost Patrol" continues to move the saga of Captain Maddox into new directions, introducing new characters and enemies. As if our captain didn't have enough trouble already. The fifth volume of the Lost Starship Series begins with Maddox making a free fall into space just for kicks. But this is Maddox, a guy who's half New Man and has saved the earth from certain annihilation. Immediately he's set upon by two separate assassination teams and meets up with the Spacers, a secretive and highly technically capable group rumored to have ties to the mysterious Builders. He meets an old woman Spacer, the Visionary, and she dubs him the "di-far," which means something like a playmaker in the universe. Maddox then takes on Shu 15, a Spacer he rescues. She's very thankful for her life and seems devoted, at first. But like all Heppner stories, there's more going on in the background. Allies can turn, and Shu 15 once tried to kill him in a past book in the series. This time Maddox sets out on probably his least favorite assignment with the ancient alien-built ship and its AI Galyan. He must find the dreaded Swarm Imperium. Maddox brings the professor, who hates Shu. Heppner creates all sorts of conflict, and it appears many times that this may be the final voyage of Maddox and crew. The threats and challenges pose a tremendous barrier to the mission's success, and the androids, who tried to kill Maddox early on in this volume, remain a threat. Maddox and company get little aid. What I enjoy most is how this motley crew pull a semblance of success from near impossible odds, and Heppner puts his imagination into overdrive to make Maddox's journey one hell of a ride.

too many derivative concepts, offset by very good writing and decent character development

One star removed for doubling down on the insectoid theme (there are two of them now), and punting on the Builders. There is some development of the hero, though he becomes too cocky, and there might be a hint of development in Luddendorf. Or maybe not. We'll see. That would be interesting. Also a hint of development among the robots, however this much is very Asimovian and therefore derivative, with two factions of robots, one sometimes "helping" humans but remaining secret, etc. However, the other faction is non-Asimovian (neither explained nor very interesting, either). Some loose ends as the fate of the kidnapped engineer in the prologue is never revealed. And the fate of the Builders is right out of StarGate SG-1. The writing, however, is as good as the first in the series, very entertaining, so I gave it a positive rating.

A Must Read Story: Great Action, Deeper Lore, and a good dose of humor :)

Five stars for me. The writing continues to improve; This 5th book in the series has a great balance of humor mixed in with serious story and action. There is continued character building of a few of the main characters, with substantial insertions of other important actors. The best part is a significant broadening of scope and lore for the Lost Starship Series universe. I tend to 'savor' books over time but this 5th installment I could not put down*.

This is a great book in a great series; Let's hope Vaughn Heppner is a Methuselah man so this can continue for a while :).

* For reference and comparison, (months later) I am still struggling to get started with the 4th book in the Expanse series.
